Ahmed Gebrel (born January 22, 1991) is a former Olympic swimmer who was born in Cairo (Egypt) for a Palestinian father and Egyptian mother. He started swimming in Al-Ahly Sporting Club in Egypt at 4 years. At that time he used to hold only the Palestinian nationality so at age 15 he could represent his country Palestine in 2006. He hold the Palestinian Swimming Records in: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle, as well as the 200m and 400m Individual Medley.[ citation needed ]

Gebrel is the first and the only Palestinian swimmer to compete twice in the Olympic Games; he participated at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. [1] He won titles and awards during his career representing Al-Ahly Sporting club in Egypt, Club Natacion Piera and Club Natacion Barcelona in Spain, and in international competitions representing Palestine. Moreover, he competed in four World FINA Championships in Rome 2009, Shanghai 2011, Barcelona 2013 & Kazan 2015.[ citation needed ]

He retired in 2016 and started his career as a swimming coach. He lives in United Arab Emirates since 2016, he became a competition Squads program manager in Dubai besides that he works for Abu Dhabi Sports Channel as a commentator. [2]

Olympic career

He represented Palestine at the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the Men's 400 metre freestyle and finishing in 27th place in the heats. He finished 3rd in his heat; however, he managed to break his own personal best by 9.89 seconds. After his achievement in London 2012, he received an Olympic scholarship in Barcelona to continue his professional career as an international swimmer.[ citation needed ]

Ahmed made history by representing Palestine in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, as he was the first and so far only Palestinian swimmer to compete twice at the Olympic Games. He completed in the Men's 200 metre freestyle, finishing in 47th place in the heats.[ citation needed ]

Ahmed Akram Mahmoud is an Egyptian competitive swimmer who is an African and youth olympic champion as well as the Egyptian record holder in the 800 and 1500-metre freestyle and 200m butterfly. He finished fourth in the 1500-metre freestyle at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships. Ahmed placed 11th at the Rio Olympics in 2016 in the 1500-metre freestyle. He currently swims with club coach Matt Magee at ONEflow Aquatics in Neckarsulm, Germany.

Anastasia "Nastiya" Gorbenko is an Israeli competitive swimmer. She competes in the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and medley. She has won 8 World and European championships gold medals, competed at 2 Olympic finals, broken most of the Israeli national records for women and mixed relays, and is considered to be Israel's greatest swimmer of all time. In February 2024, Gorbenko won a silver medal at the Doha World Championships in the women's 400 meters individual medley. Gorbenko is representing Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in swimming in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4x200m freestyle relay, and mixed 4x100m medley relay on July 28-30 and August 1-3, 2024, in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris.
