Airsprung is a British brand of beds and other furniture, headquartered in Trowbridge, Wiltshire and run by Airsprung Group plc. [1]

History

A mattress factory, Chapmans of Trowbridge, was founded in 1871 in Trowbridge, the county town of Wiltshire, and began using the Airsprung brand name in the 1930s or 1940s. [2] Airsprung Limited was founded in 1965. By 1987, the company was the UK's second-largest manufacturer of beds. [3]

In 1988 the company built a factory in South Yorkshire to make pine furniture.

Ownership

Airsprung Group was floated on the London Stock Exchange, on the Over the Counter Market, on 22 November 1976 with shares selling for 27p. [4] At this point, the company was the UK's largest manufacturer of bunk beds, and the UK's sixth-largest manufacturer of beds, with 5.8% of the UK market in 1975. The company's turnover in 1975 was £5.7m, with sales of £7.3m expected for 1976. The company made £553,000 in profit in 1975.

On 16 December 1982 it bought the Slumberland Ltd bed manufacturer for £2.25m; Slumberland at the time was turning over around £8m, but had suffered a £1m loss in 1981. [5]

The company joined the Unlisted Securities Market (USM) in June 1986. By 1987, the company was turning over £24m.

The company's shares traded on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) from 1991 until 16 December 2011, when the shares were acquired by Portnard Limited, a Jersey company. [6]

Structure

The company's headquarters and factory is on the B3106 in the north of Trowbridge. As of 2018, the company had revenue of £40m and around 500 employees. [7]

Mattresses may consist of a quilted or similarly fastened case, usually of heavy cloth, containing materials such as hair, straw, cotton, foam rubber, or a framework of metal springs. Mattresses may also be filled with air or water.

G Plan is a British furniture brand. It began as a pioneering range of furniture in the United Kingdom produced by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe. The success of G Plan led to E Gomme becoming one of the UK's largest furniture manufacturers, with profits increasing sixfold between 1952 and 1958 when it was floated as an IPO. Since 2005, G Plan has been a subsidiary of Sofa Brands International.

Slumberland Furniture, Inc. is a family-owned furniture retailer in the Midwestern United States, founded in 1967.

Simmons Bedding Company

The Simmons Bedding Company is an American major manufacturer of mattresses and related bedding products, based in Atlanta, Georgia. The company was founded in 1870, and is one of the oldest companies of its kind in the United States. Simmons' flagship brand is Beautyrest. In addition to operating 18 manufacturing facilities in the United States and Puerto Rico, the company licenses its products internationally. According to a Simmons press release, net sales for 2005 were $855 million, and its revenue was $1.13 billion in 2007 and $1.228 billion in 2013. As of 2011, Simmons ranked in third place among U.S. mattress manufacturers, with a 15.7 percent market share. In 2012, Simmons and its sister company Serta International were acquired by American private equity company Advent International.

Sealy Corporation

Sealy is a brand of mattresses marketed and sold by Tempur Sealy International. It draws its name from the city where the Sealy Corporation originally started, Sealy, Texas, United States.

Leggett & Platt (L&P), based in Carthage, Missouri, is a diversified manufacturer that designs and produces various engineered components and products that can be found in most homes and automobiles. The firm was founded in 1883, and consists of 15 business units, 23,000 employee-partners, and 145 manufacturing facilities located in 18 countries.

Blue Circle Industries

Blue Circle Industries was a British public company manufacturing cement. It was founded in 1900 as the Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd through the fusion of 24 cement works, mostly around on the Thames and Medway estuaries, together having around a 70% market share of the British cement market. In 1911, the British Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd was formed by the addition of a further 35 companies, creating a company with an initial 80% of the British cement market.

Dreams is a United Kingdom-based bed retailer and manufacturer specialising in beds, mattresses, bedroom furniture and bed linen. The first Dreams store was opened in 1987 by Mike Clare, and today there are over 200 stores nationwide. The company has its own purpose-designed mattress factory, and currently employs around 1,500 people, across a network of retail showrooms.

Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre

Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre is a building in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, which serves as a focal point for heritage services relating to Wiltshire and Swindon. It is funded by Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council. It has purpose-built archive storage and research facilities and incorporates the local studies library, museums service, archaeology service, Wiltshire buildings record and the conservation service. These services were formerly housed in separate locations in Trowbridge and Salisbury and are now together under one roof. The centre opened to the public on 31 October 2007 and is being marketed as a "passport to the past" for those interested in Wiltshire and Swindon history.

The company has thirty factories around the world and is currently headquartered in North Brunswick, New Jersey. Chittenden & Eastman's intellectual property has since been purchased by Mattress Development Company of Delaware which reintroduced the Eastman House brand into the marketplace. The company is active with over 30 factories and licensees worldwide.

Live Company Group plc formerly known as Parallel Media Group plc, World Sport Group plc and Orchard Furniture plc, is a public company based in Surrey and formerly in London. The company is listed in the Alternative Investment Market. The company was the parent company of both World Sport Group (Jersey) Limited and Parallel Media Group International Limited from 2001 to 2002. However, the founders of World Sport Group Limited bought back WSG in 2002; while World Sport Group plc was renamed to Parallel Media Group plc. Silentnight is the largest UK manufacturer of beds & mattresses and is located in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, England. The company is owned by HIG Europe who acquired the company on 10 May 2011, following a period in administration. The company also manufactures Rest Assured beds & mattresses and was originally founded in 1946.

Sleepeezee is a British manufacturer of mattresses situated in Kent. It has a Royal Warrant of Appointment for its products. Travelodge UK feature their mattresses.
