The Akai SG01v is a ROMpler, [1] meaning that it plays prerecorded samples stored on a ROM chip, as opposed to generating sound through onboard signal generators. The unit was produced by Akai in 1995. [2] It is housed in a 1U half-rack chassis and can be controlled through General MIDI messages. The SG01v has 32 voice polyphony and 16 part multi-timbrality. [3] Considering the technology of the day, the SG01v reproduces with surprising fidelity the sounds of even older analogue synthesizers, as well as two drum kits. The "V" designation in the model name denotes "vintage" sounds. The model line also includes an SG01k ("K" for "keys"), which was strictly a General MIDI module, and an SG01p ("P" for "piano"). [3]

Front panel

The front panel contains a three digit, seven-segment LED display and a volume control button. Basic editing can be done via the seven control buttons on the front of the unit. [4]

Sounds

The unit contains 256 preset patches [3] and two drum kits. Patches emulate the sounds of models from such manufacturers as Roland, Moog, Oberheim, PPG, Solina. The drum kits emulate the styles of electronic kits like the Roland TR-808 and Roland TR-909, as well as Simmons drum kits.

Roland MC-303

The Roland MC-303 is the first of a series of musical instruments known as a Groovebox. It combines a simple sound module with a sequencer to record and store notation, along with controls aimed at encouraging the musician to improvise the music while it is playing. Despite the number in its name and the attention it received at its launch, the MC-303 has more in common with other MC prefixed synthesizers, which contain built-in sequencers, than it does with the famous Roland TB-303. As the first Groovebox, the MC-303 was the first in a line of inexpensive products specifically targeted towards house DJs and amateur home musicians rather than professional producers. It was superseded by the Roland MC-505. It is the predecessor to the Roland JX-305, Roland D2, Roland MC-307, Roland EG-101, Roland MC-09, Roland MC-909, Roland MC-808, and most recently the Roland MC-707 in 2019, along with its more portable sibling, the Roland MC-101.

The Roland JD-990 Super JD is a module version of Roland JD-800 synthesizer with expanded capabilities, which was released in 1993. JD-990 is a multitimbral synthesizer utilizing 'wave-table' sample-based synthesis technology. It is equipped with 6 MB of ROM containing sampled PCM waveforms, four sets of stereo outputs that are assignable to individual, internal, instruments, and standard MIDI in/out/through ports. Electronic drum module

An electronic drum module is an electronic or digital music device in an electronic drum kit that serves as the central processing unit and sound module. The drum module creates or produces the drum kit sounds or other sounds selected by the drummer. By itself, a drum module cannot play or sound drum beats. It only produces drum sounds when a performer strikes electronic drum pads or acoustic drum kit instruments that have electronic "triggers" attached to them. When the electronic drum pads or trigger-equipped instruments are struck, this sends a signal to the drum module, which produces the corresponding electronic drum sound. Even when drum pads and/or triggers are connected to a drum module, the drum module by itself does not make any audible sound. Like other electronic instruments such as the synthesizer, the drum module only outputs an electronic signal. The performer can hear this signal by connecting headphones to the drum module or by plugging the drum module into an amplifier and loudspeaker or PA system for audible practice or live performances. The drum module's output signal can also be patched into an audio console for concerts or sound recording. The nomenclature varies. The Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter is a rack mount sound module version of the Roland Jupiter-6 and the Roland Jupiter-8 synthesizers. It is an 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer that was manufactured by Roland between 1984 and 1987. It is the only one of the MKS series of synthesizers to have fully analog voltage-controlled oscillators. The voice architecture is almost identical to the Jupiter-6 synthesizer. The service manual states that "The module board of MKS-80 features the following in addition to that of JP-6, its brother module. 1) HPF. 2) Low boost circuit in the 2nd VCA. 3) DC supply current boost circuit (IC50)." The unit is capable of producing most of the Jupiter-8's signature sounds, in addition to many sounds unique to the MKS-80.
