Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, commonly known as AAMUSTED is a public university located in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. The university was established under 1026 Act of 2020 of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana to champion the course of higher technical, vocational and entrepreneurial education in the country. The university was formed from the amalgamation of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) and the College of Agriculture Education (CAGRIC), Asante- Mampong which were both once campuses of the University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW). [2] [3]

History

On August 27, 2020, the College of Technology Education, Kumasi and the College of Agriculture Education, Asante- Mampong were convert to formed the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development. The name honors Mr. Akenten Appiah-Menka a Ghanaian Lawyer, Politician and Businessman. [4] [5] [6]

The College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK ) was established in the year 1966 as Technical Teachers College (TTC), later on it was changed to Kumasi Advanced Technical Teachers College (KATTC) in1978. The College of Agriculture Education (CAGRIC), Asante - Mampong on the other hand had it from St. Andrews Training College in Akropong-Akwapim which was established in 1946 by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Scottish Mission. [7] [8]

Both colleges were amalgamated together with other seven (7) educational institutions to form the University of College Education in 1992 under the PNDC Law 322.

Prof. Frederick Kwaku Sarfo is the first and current Vice-Chancellor of the university. [9]

Campuses

Kumasi Campus

The Kumasi campus which is located in Tanoso is the main campus of the university. This campus alone houses 5 faculties with 12 Departments of the university. [10]

Mampong Campus

The Asante-Mampong campus is located 63 kilometers away from the main campus. It is located in Asante-Mampong which is the capital of the Mampong Municipal Assembly. The campus houses 4 faculties and 11 Department.

Kwahu or Kwawu is an area and group of people that live in Ghana and are part of the Twi-speaking Akan group. The region has been dubbed Asaase Aban, or the Natural Fortress, given its position as the highest habitable elevation in the country. Prempeh College is a public secondary boarding school for boys located in Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region, Ghana. The school was founded in 1949 by the Asanteman traditional authority, the British Colonial Government, the Methodist Church Ghana and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The school is named after the King of Ashanti (Asantehene), Sir Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, who donated the land on which the school was built, and was modeled on Eton College in England.

Nicholas Yaw Boafo Adade (1927–2013) was a former supreme court judge and Attorney-General of Ghana. He was first appointed to the Supreme Court in 1980 and became acting chief justice from 1990 to 1991. He was the Attorney General of Ghana between April 1969 to February 1971 in the National Liberation Council administration and Busia government. He was Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South constituency under the Second Ghanaian Republic.

He is popularly known as NAPO, an acronym for his traditional name, Nana Poku. He served as the Minister of Energy from 2021 to 2024.

Kennedy Kwasi Kankam is a Ghanaian politician and member of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana representing the Nhyiaeso Constituency in the Ashanti Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party. He is currently the municipal chief executive for Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly.

Akenten Appiah-Menka was a Ghanaian lawyer, politician and businessman. He was the deputy minister for trade and industry and later deputy attorney general in the second republic.

Barima Nana Akwasi Agyeman was a Ghanaian civil servant and a member of the Asante Royal family who served as Mayor of Kumasi serving as Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. He was popularly known as Okumkom, literally meaning ''killer of hunger''. He is the longest serving mayor of Kumasi serving for over 20 years as mayor. He died at the age of 86. He was a prominent member of National Democratic Congress.

Agyeman Badu Akosa is a Ghanaian pathologist, academic, politician and social commentator. He served as the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service from 2002 to 2006. He is a member of the Convention People's Party and is a well-known believer in the ideals of Kwame Nkrumah, founder of the CPP. He contested for the Party's presidential candidate ahead the 2008 General elections and lost to Dr. Paa Kwesi Ndoum. He is a professor of Pathology. He is an advocate on lifestyle issues.

Alexander Atta Yaw Kyerematen was a Ghanaian social anthropologist and the commissioner for local government from 1966 to 1969. Kyerematen was the first director of the Ghana National Culture Centre in Kumasi and previously also served as Town Clerk of the Kumasi Municipal Council.

Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School is a second-cycle institution in Effiduase Asokore in the Sekyere East District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The school is located on the outskirt of Asokore off Ahensan Road. The school is run by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service in Ghana. In 2015, the school won the Member of Parliament's Independence Cup and was also the second Best Technical Institute in the Ashanti Region.
