The Nigerian National Order of Merit Award (NNOM) is an academic award conferred on distinguished academicians and intellectuals who have made outstanding contributions to the academic, growth and development of Nigeria. The award is often conferred on its recipient by the Federal Government of Nigeria following a nomination and approval of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award. Its recipient is often decorated by the President of Nigeria. Recipients of the award have the legal right to use the postnominal title: Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM). It is the highest academic award in Nigeria and since its institution in 1979, the award has so far been conferred on only 70 distinguished academicians.
Essien Etim Moses, NNOM, OFR was a Nigerian Professor of Hematology and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award. Professor Essien began his career in 1970 at the University College Hospital, Ibadan as a lecturer and Consultant of Hematology. In 1977, he became a professor of Hematology in same university. He is a member of the WHO Expert Panel on Blood and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Francis Idachaba, NNOM, OFR was a Nigerian professor of agricultural economics, chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award and vice chancellor of Kogi State University. He was the first vice chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, a position he held from 1988 to 1995.
Cyril Agodi Onwumechili is a Nigerian Professor of Physics and staff of the University of Ibadan. He was the first Nigerian Geophysicist and the second President the Nigerian Academy of Science. Attia Ashour was an Egyptian emeritus professor of Applied Mathematics at Cairo University. He was a former president of the Arab Union of Mathematical and Physics. A former Director of Advanced Schools on the Physics of the Earth. He was an elected member of World Academy of Sciences, a founding member of African Academy of Sciences and he was also a Knight in the National Merit Order in France.
Godwin Osakpemwoya Samuel EkhaguereNNOM is a Nigerian professor of Mathematics at the University of Ibadan and the founder and president of the International Centre for Mathematical & Computer Sciences (ICMCS). He is a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, a former sub Dean of Faculty of Science University of Ibadan and a member of African Academy of Sciences. He is also a recipient of Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) awarded by President Muhammadu Buhari.
