Alan Harris is a Welsh playwright and television writer. [1]
Has written plays for theatres throughout the United Kingdom, including Paines Plough and National Theatre Wales. [2]
He won a Judges’ Award at the 2015 Bruntwood Prize [3] for his play How My Light is Spent at the Royal Exchange, Manchester. He also wrote The Opportunity of Efficiency, the first international collaboration for National Theatre Wales with the New National Theatre Tokyo. The play was staged at the New National Theatre Tokyo's The Pit stage in 2013 and was directed by NTW artistic director John McGrath.
In 2011 he set up liveartshow, a company specialising in new theatre with music with director Martin Constantine and composer Harry Blake. The company staged Manga Sister, [4] a contemporary dance opera, at The Yard, London and the same venue staged a re-telling of Rhinegold by the same company in 2012. Liveartshow also presented The Future For Beginners, a co-production with the Wales Millennium Centre, at Summerhall at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014 along with a national tour. The production won a Musical Theatre Network Award while at Edinburgh. [5]
International work includes Marsha at the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington DC [6] and A Scythe of Time, a collaboration with United States composer Mark Swanson.
He wrote the television drama The Left Behind for BBC Three / BBC Studios which won the BAFTA for Best Single Drama in 2020 as well as the Royal Television Society award in the same category.
Radio plays include The Gold Farmer for BBC Radio 3's The Wire season and plays for BBC Radio 4.
His debut stage play, Orange, was commissioned and produced by Sgript Cymru.
He is the winner of a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales [7] and represented by Emily Hickman at The Agency, London.

Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour is a play based on the 1998 novel The Sopranos by Alan Warner, adapted for the stage by Lee Hall. It received its world premiere at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 2015, before embarking on a short UK tour. The play is a co-production between the National Theatre of Scotland and Live Theatre. The production ran at London's National Theatre in August 2016 and was scheduled to transfer to the West End's Duke of York's Theatre in May 2017.
The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is a British competition for playwriting, the largest of its kind in Europe—in 2019 it received 2561 entries. Since its inception in 2005, more than 15,000 scripts have been entered, £304,000 has been awarded to 34 prize-winning writers, and 24 winning productions have been staged in 38 UK-wide venues. In 2015 the prize celebrated its 10th anniversary and is now recognised as a launch-pad for some of the country's most respected and produced playwrights. The Prize is awarded to scripts that are original and unperformed. The award is a joint venture between the property company Bruntwood and the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester the Prize is an opportunity for writers of any background and experience to enter unperformed plays to be judged by a panel of industry experts for a chance to win part of a prize fund totalling £40,000.
