Rabbi Albert Sebastian Chait MBE (born 26 February 1986) is an Orthodox Rabbi, Cantor, and Senior Rabbi to the United Hebrew Congregation in Leeds, United Kingdom. [1] [2] [3] [4] As a prominent younger Rabbi, his community service, talks and singing have a notable online presence, as well as in traditional national media. [5] [6] [7] [8]

Personal and early life

Known by all as "Alby", he was born in Liverpool, son of Helena Chait and Rev. Henry Mark Chait, Cantor to the Southport Hebrew Congregation and later the Greenbank Congregation in Liverpool. He attended Manchester Jewish Grammar School, moving in 2004 to the Midrash Shmuel Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

Career

Tutored by his father in cantorial music and ministerial duties, Chait first led services age 14. At 19 he was appointed in Leeds, where he is now Senior Rabbi to the United Hebrew Congregation, the largest UK congregation outside London, as well as Jewish Chaplain to Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. [10]

Chait has led varied initiatives, such as in Holocaust Education, [11] and supporting healthcare workers. [12] With a notably high impact online especially during the pandemic, in January 2022 he was awarded MBE by Queen Elizabeth II for service to the Jewish community. [2] [10]

Sir Benjamin "Ben" Helfgott was a Polish-born British Holocaust survivor, Olympian and champion weightlifter. He was one of two Jewish athletes known to have competed in the Olympics after surviving the Holocaust, along with Alfred Nakache, a French champion swimmer and water polo player. Helfgott spent his adult life promoting Holocaust education, meeting with national leaders in the UK to promote cultural integration and peace.

The Gardens Shul, formally, the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation (CTHC) is a Modern Orthodox synagogue located in the Company Gardens, in the Gardens neighborhood of Cape Town. It has the oldest Jewish congregation in South Africa, dating to 1841. The congregation, known as "The Mother Synagogue of South Africa," possesses two historic structures, the 1863 synagogue known as the Old Shul and the 1905 synagogue. Charles Bender was a British-Canadian rabbi. He was spiritual leader of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue from 1928 to 1940, and of the Adath Israel Congregation from 1940 until his retirement in 1969, remaining rabbi emeritus at the latter institution until his death. He also served as founding president of the Montreal Board of Jewish Ministers, editor of the Canadian Jewish Chronicle, dean of the Jewish Teachers' Seminary of Montreal, and national chairman of the Jewish National Fund in Canada.
