Aleksejs Loskutovs (born August 22,1962) is a Latvian politician. He served as a Member of the European Parliament for Unity from January 24,2019,until July 1,2019.
Aleksejs Loskutovs attended secondary school in Riga. In 1984,he graduated with a law degree from the University of Latvia and later obtained a doctorate in 1993. [1] He also studied at the University of Helsinki. [2]
In 1984,he joined the Prosecutor's Office in Riga and also worked at the Ministry of the Interior of the Latvian SSR. [3]
From 1993 to 1997,he worked as the chief criminologist at the Latvian Centre for Criminology Research,and from 1991 to 2003,he served as an assistant and professor at the Latvian Police Academy. [3]
In 2003,he became a professor at the University of Daugavpils. [3]
In 2008,as part of a protest against his dismissal,he became involved in politics with the Society for Political Change,which later joined a right-wing coalition. [4] [5] Aleksejs Loskutovs was elected as a member of the Saeima for the 10th,11th,and 12th legislatures. [6] [7] [8] He ran for the European Parliament in the 2014 elections but was not successful.
In 2017,he joined the Movement For! before leaving it the following year. [9] [10]
During the 2018 Latvian parliamentary elections,he ran on the Unity party list but was not elected. He entered the European Parliament in January 2019 following the resignation of Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš. [11]
The politics of Latvia takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. The President holds a primarily ceremonial role as Head of State. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament,the Saeima. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The Economist Intelligence Unit rated Latvia a "flawed democracy" in 2022.

Latvia has recognised civil unions since 1 July 2024. On 9 November 2023,the Saeima passed legislation establishing same-sex civil unions conferring similar rights and obligations as marriage with the exception of adoption and inheritance rights. The bill was signed into law by President Edgars Rinkēvičs in January 2024,and took effect on 1 July 2024. This followed a ruling from the Constitutional Court of Latvia on 12 November 2020 that the Latvian Constitution entitles same-sex couples to receive the same benefits and protections afforded by Latvian law to married opposite-sex couples,and gave the Saeima until 1 June 2022 to enact a law protecting same-sex couples. In December 2021,the Supreme Court ruled that should the Saeima fail to pass civil union legislation before the 1 June 2022 deadline,same-sex couples may apply to a court to have their relationship recognized. The Saeima failed to meet this deadline,and the first same-sex union was recognized by the Administrative District Court on 30 May 2022.
Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš is an American-Latvian politician who served as the prime minister of Latvia from 2019 until 2023. A linguist and businessman by profession,he previously served as Latvia's minister of Economics and a Member of the European Parliament. Born in Wilmington,Delaware,United States,to parents who had left Latvia during the Soviet occupation,he was active in the American Latvian community throughout his youth.
Sarmīte Ēlerte is a Latvian politician who is a member of the Unity party. She was Minister of Culture of Latvia from 3 November 2010 until 25 October 2011.
Lolita Čigāne is an international consultant in elections,good governance,parliamentarianism and anti-corruption. She was previously a member of parliament,civil society activist,journalist and the chairperson of the Board of Transparency International Latvia. Lolita Cigane was first elected to the 10th Saeima (parliament) in 2010. She served a full term as a Member of Parliament in the 11th Saeima (2011–2014),was the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Finance in 2013-2014 and a member of 12th Saeima,serving also as the chair of the European Affairs Committee until November 2018. Movement For! is a liberal political party in Latvia. It is positioned in the centre on the political spectrum with an emphasis on social liberalism. The party was formed in August 2017. From 2018 to 2022 it was one of the members of the Development/For! alliance,before it de facto dissolved.
Juris Pūce is a Latvian economist,lawyer,and politician. Former Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia in the government of Krisjanis Karins and chairman of the board of the "Latvian Development" party. Pūce was elected deputy of 13th Saeima from the "Development / For!".
