Passaic is a city in Passaic County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census,the city was the state's 16th-most-populous municipality,with a population of 70,537,falling behind Bayonne,an increase of 756 (+1.1%) from the 2010 census count of 69,781,which in turn reflected an increase of 1,920 residents (+2.8%) from the 2000 census population of 67,861. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated a population of 68,903 for 2023,making it the 552nd-most populous municipality in the nation. Among cities with more than 50,000 people,Passaic was the fifth-most densely populated municipality in the United States,with more than 22,000 people per square mile.
Sharpe James is an American former politician from New Jersey. A Democrat,he served as the 37th mayor of Newark from 1986 to 2006 and as a state senator for the 29th legislative district from 1999 to 2008. He is the longest-serving mayor in Newark's history and is a subject of the 2005 feature-film Street Fight,which depicts Newark's 2002 mayoral election where James faced a closer-than-expected challenge from Cory Booker. Once a popular figure in New Jersey politics,his career effectively ended after he was convicted of high-profile corruption charges in 2008.
Edward Robert Vrdolyak,also known as "Fast Eddie",is a former American politician and lawyer. He was a longtime Chicago alderman and the head of the Cook County Democratic Party until 1987 when he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Chicago on the Illinois Solidarity Party ticket. He subsequently ran again in 1989 on the Republican Party ticket. He was a prominent opponent of Harold Washington and the de facto leader of the so-called "Vrdolyak 29" that opposed and blocked many of Washington's measures.

Carl Kruger is an American convicted felon and politician from New York. A Democrat from Brooklyn,he represented District 27 in the New York State Senate. Kruger was first elected to the State Senate in 1994 and later became Chair of the Senate Social Service Committee and the Senate Finance Committee. In December 2011,he resigned from the State Senate and pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges. In 2012,Kruger was sentenced to seven years in prison.
William Frank Boyland Jr. is an American convicted felon and former politician from the state of New York. A Democrat,Boyland represented District 55 (Brooklyn) in the New York State Assembly and was first elected in a 2003 special election. He forfeited his Assembly seat on March 6,2014 due to his conviction on federal felony charges related to extortion,bribery,and official corruption,and he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Rivera pleaded guilty to attempted extortion,stepped down as mayor,and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He was succeeded in office by Gary Schaer.
Peter J. Cammarano III is an American disbarred attorney,former Democratic politician and a convicted felon. He was the 37th mayor of Hoboken,New Jersey,serving from July 1 until July 31,2009. Cammarano was arrested by the FBI on corruption charges on July 23,2009,as part of an international criminal investigation known as Operation Bid Rig;he resigned from office eight days later. He pleaded guilty to extortion in April 2010 and was later sentenced to 24 months in federal prison.

Patrick DeAngelo Cannon is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served on the City Council of Charlotte,North Carolina from 1994 through 2013 and was subsequently elected the city's 56th Mayor in November 2013. On March 26,2014,Cannon was arrested on charges of accepting over $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen wanting to work with the city. Cannon resigned as mayor later that evening,and was later sentenced to 44 months in prison.
Corruption in Illinois has been a problem from the earliest history of the state. Electoral fraud in Illinois pre-dates the territory's admission to the Union in 1818. Illinois had the third most federal criminal convictions for public corruption between 1976 and 2012,behind New York and California. A study published by the University of Illinois Chicago in 2022 ranked Illinois as the second most corrupt state in the nation,with 4 out of the last 11 governors serving time in prison.
Operation Mississippi Hustle was a federal investigation initiated in 2014 by the United States Attorney and prosecuted in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. It examined the relationship between officials of the Mississippi Department of Corrections and various for-profit prison contractors and subcontractors,who have provided services to the five private prisons in the state. One,Walnut Grove,closed in September 2016 but has since reopened.
