Passaic is a city in Passaic County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census,the city was the state's 16th-most-populous municipality,with a population of 70,537,falling behind Bayonne,an increase of 756 (+1.1%) from the 2010 census count of 69,781,which in turn reflected an increase of 1,920 residents (+2.8%) from the 2000 census population of 67,861. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that the city's population was 69,128 in 2022,ranking the city the 546th-most-populous in the country. Among cities with more than 50,000 people,Passaic was the fifth-most-densely-populated municipality in the United States,with more than 22,000 people per square mile.

She is a member of the Democratic Party and was the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Jersey in the 2013 general election,which she lost to Republican incumbent Chris Christie.

Sarlo is a former Assistant Majority Leader of the Senate,a position held from 2004 until 2007,has been Deputy Majority Leader of the New Jersey Senate since 2008,and is also mayor of the borough of Wood-Ridge,New Jersey.

DiGaetano also served in the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 36th Legislative District from 1986 –1987 and again from 1992 –2006. DiGaetano also served as a member of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission,the Legislative Service Commission and the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology. DiGaetano originally represented Passaic,New Jersey,but moved to Nutley,New Jersey following his 1999 re-election. He served with John Kelly of Nutley for many years in the Assembly,but for his last two terms in office he served as part of a split ticket;Wood-Ridge,New Jersey mayor Paul Sarlo was elected to Kelly's seat in 2001 and after Sarlo moved to the State Senate Frederick Scalera of Nutley was elected in 2003 to replace him.

The 2017 New Jersey General Assembly elections were held on November 7,2017,to elect members to all 80 seats of the New Jersey General Assembly. Prior to the elections,Democrats held a 52–28 majority in the lower house. Overall,the Democrats increased their majority by 2 to a super-majority at 54–26,due to holding all their seats as well as picking up open seats in District 2 and District 16. This tied Democrats for their largest majority since 1979.
