She has previously held the office of Minister of Defence and Military Veterans from June 2012 to August 2021. She was also the Minister of Home Affairs from 2004 to 2009 and Minister of Correctional Services from 2009 to 2012.

Jacobs was the Secretary of the provincial ANC in the Western Cape from 2015 until the dissolution of the provincial structure in 2019.
Alvin Botes is a South African African National Congress (ANC) politician from the Northern Cape who has been serving as the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since May 2019.
