Alexander Evans OBE is an academic who has served as a British diplomat. He is a Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics. [1] He also holds a visiting appointment at the University of Southern California. [2]

Education

He has a B.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics, was a World Fellow at Yale University [3] and has a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of London. [4]

Career

A career diplomat, he is a former adviser in 10 Downing Street (2020-2021). He was previously Director Cyber in the Foreign Office (2018-2020), Britain's Deputy High Commissioner to India (2015-2018), and acting British High Commissioner to India from November 2015 to March 2016. [5] He has served with the British High Commission in Pakistan twice, latterly as acting deputy and acting High Commissioner to Pakistan in the early summer of 2021. He has also led the UN Security Council expert group on Al Qaida, Daesh and the Taliban [4] and worked for the first Obama Administration as a senior adviser in the U.S. Department of State. [6] He was Strategy Director at the British Cabinet Office (2021-2022). [7]

He is a former Senior Fellow [8] at Yale University, Gwilym Gibbon Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford and Henry Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy [9] at the Library of Congress. He was a Bernard Schwartz Fellow at the Asia Society in New York. [10]

He serves as a Trustee and non-executive director of the Internet Watch Foundation, is a member of the Wilton Park Advisory Council, [11] a trustee of the International Longevity Centre [12] and serves on the advisory council of the British Library. [13] He is an advisory board member of the Traverse City International Affairs Forum in Michigan, USA [14] and sits on the advisory board of the Ratiu Forum, Romania. [15] In November 2023 he was appointed a Senior Research Fellow at the British Centre for Army Leadership. [16]

Publications

He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society [17] and has contributed to books and journals, including in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the Washington Quarterly, Asian Affairs, Contemporary South Asia, International Affairs, Current History, The World Today and Small Wars and Insurgencies. [18] He is the author of a history of disinterest, a study of informal networks and policymaking, and a range of work on South Asia. He is a former editorial board member of Asian Affairs and is a former Council Member of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs.

He was the Special Adviser and Head of UNEP's Green Economy Initiative, a major UN project suite to demonstrate that greening of economies is not a burden on growth but rather a new engine for growing wealth, increasing decent employment, and reducing persistent poverty. Pavan was also the Study Leader for the ground breaking TEEB study commissioned by G8+5 and hosted by UNEP. Under his leadership, TEEB sized the global problem of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation in economic and human welfare terms, and proposed solutions targeted at policy-makers, administrators, businesses and citizens. TEEB presented its widely acclaimed Final Report suite at the UN meeting by Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Nagoya, Japan.

Alexander Mirtchev is an American business executive, academic, author, and philanthropist working in the areas of global economic security, political risk analysis, and geo-economics. He is a vice chair of the Atlantic Council of the United States, member of the executive and strategy committees and the advisory council of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. Mirtchev is also a founding council member of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, where he also served as a senior fellow and member of the Wilson National Cabinet. She is a Senior Fellow at Yale's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, where she lectures on Middle East politics and global affairs.
