Alexandra Hill Tinoco is a Salvadoran politician who has been El Salvador's Foreign Minister since June 2019.
Hill Tinoco is the daughter of Jaime Hill,who was president of the Anti-drug Foundation of El Salvador (Fundasalva) and alderman of the municipal council of San Salvador. [1] She has a Bachelor of Arts in political science and Latin American studies from Boston University and a master's degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health,where she was a NIDA Humphrey Fellow and specialized in public policy management,prevention of drug use and drug abuse treatment. She is a member of the Hill family,whose roots go back to James Hill,an Englishman who sailed to El Salvador in order to start a coffee-planting business. The business developed greatly by using new strategies to develop new coffee mixtures. [4]
Hill Tinoco worked as executive director of Fundasalva,an NGO focused on the prevention and treatment of drug abuse. [2] She was a member of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission in 2006 and led the Drug Reduction Section in 2012. [2]
Hill Tinoco has worked in the Organization of American States and with the United States Department of State and the United Nations Office on Drugs. [1] Along with Elizabeth Lira,she authored the book The Other Face of Peace (1995). [2] Hill Tinoco was the first cabinet appointment announced by President-elect Nayib Bukele,on Twitter,in May 2019. Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez is a Salvadoran politician and businessman who,since 1 June 2019,has been the 81st president of El Salvador. As a member of the Nuevas Ideas political party,Bukele is the first Salvadoran president since 1989 who was not elected as a candidate of one of the country's two major political parties:the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) or the left-wing Farabundo MartíNational Liberation Front (FMLN),of which Bukele had previously been a member.

The Salvadoran gang crackdown,known in El Salvador as the State of Exception or the War Against the Gangs,began on 27 March 2022 in response to a series of homicides committed by criminal gangs between 25 and 27 March 2022 which killed 87 people. After the killings,the Salvadoran government declared a state of emergency that suspended several constitutional rights and enabled the government to launch mass arrests of suspected gang members. The crackdown and state of emergency have since been extended 32 times as of 5 November 2024.
