Alexandra von der Weth (born 1968) is a German operatic soprano and voice teacher.

Life

Born in Coburg, Weth completed her schooling at the Gymnasium Albertinum (music high school) in Coburg; she also received singing lessons there. Afterwards she studied singing from 1987 to 1991 at the Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium München  [ de ] and graduated in 1992. [1]

Career

At the beginning of the 90s she successfully participated in several singing competitions (among others Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI).

At the Opernhaus Leipzig she made her debut in 1993 as Beauty in André Grétry's Beauty and the beast At the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1994/1995, on a scholarship, she sang the role of Blanche in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites and Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel . In 1996, she joined the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as an ensemble member. In 1999, she appeared at the Vienna State Opera as Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème , and also sang at the Metropolitan Opera in 2001. That same year, she received the Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler  [ de ]. Other roles at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein included the title roles in Alban Berg's Lulu and Bellini's Norma. She has also made appearances at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Royal Opera House Covent Garden London. [2]

In 2003, at the height of her career, Weth's voice suddenly failed. After a long period of treatment, she was able to cure her vocal cords. Her first appearance after logopaedic treatment was in 2005 as Erifile in Alessandro Scarlatti's opera Telemaco at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. [3] In the following seasons, she sang there the part of Pamina from Mozart's The Magic Flute as well as the Contessa from Le nozze di Figaro. In 2008, folgte Cleopatra in Händel's Giulio Cesare at the German Opera on the Rhine. She sang the same role at the Theater Dortmund in 2010. [4]

Weth has been intensively involved with voice training not only since her healing phase. In October 2010, she founded the "Institute for Voice Training at the Centre for Outpatient Medicine" in Wuppertal. In 2012, Weth told of her voice crisis and how she overcame it in a conversation with Christoph Schulte im Walde. [5] [6]

Since 2016, she has been active as a concert organiser and moderator. [7] Her talk-concert series "Music and Psyche" began on 29 September 2016 in Düsseldorf. [8]

Telemaco, ossia L'isola di Circe is a 1718 opera by Alessandro Scarlatti to a libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece, court poet to Queen Maria Casimira of Poland, living in exile in Rome, for the Teatro Capranica in Rome, where it was premiered during the carnival season. The opera was revived in 2005 by the Schwetzingen Festival and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.

Elisabeth Kulman Austrian classical singer (born 1973)

Elisabeth Kulman is an Austrian classical singer who has performed operatic roles in soprano, mezzo-soprano and contralto repertory. She has appeared at opera houses in Vienna and internationally. She has performed early operas such as Legrenzi's Il Giustino as well as new works, creating the role of Gora in the premiere of Reimann's Medea at the Vienna State Opera. She recorded Lieder by Mussorgsky, Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Peter Schreier and Beethoven's Missa solemnis with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. From 2015, she has focused on concert singing.

Christof Loy is a German stage director especially for opera, whose work received several awards. A freelance director, he has staged operas from Baroque to premieres of new works at major European opera houses and festivals. He is known for directing works by Mozart.

Kateryna Kasper is a Ukrainian operatic soprano. A member of the Oper Frankfurt, she has appeared in major international opera houses. She has performed in recitals and recordings. Her broad repertory includes works from Cavalieri's Spiel von Seele und Körper to the premiere of Der goldene Drache by Péter Eötvös.

Alfred Vökt was a Swiss operatic tenor who made a career at major opera houses, mainly in Germany. He focused on supporting roles and took part in world premieres such as Henze's König Hirsch in Kassel and Hans Zender's Stephen Climax at the Oper Frankfurt in 1986. Vökt appeared at major European opera houses and festivals.

Barbara Zechmeister is a German operatic soprano and voice teacher. A member of the Oper Frankfurt from 1996, she has appeared in major European opera houses and international festivals. She was a professor of voice at the Musikhochschule Hannover and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Her 2006 autobiography is entitled Hilde, du schaffst das.

Helena Forti German opera singer

Helena Forti was a dramatic soprano active 1906 – 1924, closely associated with the Dresden royal court opera, known for her beauty, voice and strong stage presence. She sang all Wagner’s opera heroines, in Dresden, Bayreuth and internationally. Other repertoire included the title role in Verdi’s Aida, Santuzza in Cavalleria and contemporary works like Marietta in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt. She created the role of Mytocle in Eugen d’Albert’s opera Die toten Augen. Her Sieglinde in Die Walküre in Braunschweig was described by the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik as “Equally endowed with youth, beauty and vocal means... (Forti) immerses herself so intensely in her role that one believes the transformation of the virgin-Goddess into a human form.” After retiring from singing she taught voice and acting in Gera, Düsseldorf and Vienna. She died in Vienna, where she lived with her stage director and Intendant husband, Walter Bruno Iltz.
