Alfred Barrow Health Centre

Alfred Barrow Health Centre is a primary care health centre in Barrow-in-Furness.

It is housed in a refurbishment of the former Alfred Barrow School with a newly built extension housing the patient-facing services and all clinical spaces. It was developed by a public private partnership, eLIFT Cumbria, involving Community Health Partnerships. It has a base for the North West Ambulance Service. [1] The contractor was ESH Construction. It opened in November 2019 [2] with a celebration event. [3]

It houses three GP surgeries - Abbey Road Surgery, Risedale Surgery, Atkinson Health Centre - and services provided by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust as well as facilities for Morecambe Bay CCG, BAE Systems and Boots Pharmacy. Furness General Hospital scandal

The Furness General Hospital scandal involves an investigation by Cumbria Constabulary and other government and public bodies into the deaths of several mothers and newborn babies, during the 2000s at Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Cases date back to 2004, with a number of major incidents occurring in 2008. The death of Joshua Titcombe and a suppressed report by the Morecambe Bay NHS Trust brought the spotlight onto FGH in 2011 when investigations began. Claims of medical records being intentionally destroyed alongside the discovery of major wrongdoing on behalf of midwives led to threats of closure to the maternity ward.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust was created in April 2001 by merging Carlisle Hospitals NHS Trust and West Cumbria Healthcare NHS Trust. It ran Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, Cumbria, the birthing unit at Penrith Hospital and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, England. Healthcare in Cumbria is now the responsibility of Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group. From 1 April 2017 32 GP practices will leave the CCG and merge with Lancashire North CCG to form Morecambe Bay CCG.
