Alice Vestergaard Ellemann-Jensen (born 29 July 1937 in Aabybro) is a former Danish journalist, newspaper editor-in-chief and television news coordinator. Now retired, she is remembered in particular as being the first woman to read the radio news on Danmarks Radio in 1963 and for being appointed to head TV 2's newly established news service in 1988. In 1971, she married Uffe Ellemann-Jensen (1941–2022), who served as Denmark's foreign minister. [1] [2] [3]
Alice Vestergaard was born on 29 July 1937 on a farm in Aabybro in the north of Jutland. After a teacher had noticed her talent for writing, she served an apprenticeship with the local newspaper Haslev Folketidende. She gained experience writing obituaries and reporting on local football matches and parish council meetings. [1] Vestergaard first married in 1955 with the actor Per Wiking with whom she had her first child. The marriage was dissolved in 1971. In 1971 she married the politician Uffe Ellemann-Jensen until his death in June 2022. Together they had a son, Jakob, in 1973. [3] [4]
After her parents divorced, Vestergaard had to earn her own living. As a result, in 1959 she worked for the newspaper Vendsyssel Tidende before moving to Danmarks Radio. In 1963, she became the first woman to read the radio news, causing quite a stir. Two years later, she went on to present the television news, TV Avisen, soon acting as news anchor. [1] [2] In 1985, Vestergaard was appointed editor-in-chief for the women's journal Søndags B.T.. Two years later, she gained wide attention for becoming head of the news service for the newly created channel TV 2. [1]
Uffe Ellemann-Jensen was a Danish politician who served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Denmark in the Conservative-led Poul Schlüter Administration from 1982 to 1993. He was leader of the Danish Liberal Party Venstre from 1984 to 1998 and President of the European Liberals 1995–2000.
The Ellemann-Jensen doctrine is a Danish idea specifically aimed at promoting small countries' ability to gain influence in the world order. The doctrine is not a written document but rather inspired by the former Danish Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen's term of office in which he promoted the notion that a small country can gain influence by supporting those greater countries that share the same values and ideas, which the small country itself embraces.

The Alternative is a green and pro-European political party in Denmark. The party was publicly launched on 27 November 2013 by former Minister of Culture Uffe Elbæk and Josephine Fock; Elbæk had been a parliamentarian for the Social Liberal Party. General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 1 November 2022, except in the Faroe Islands, where they were held on 31 October as 1 November was a national day of mourning for victims at sea. Of the 179 members of the Folketing, 175 were elected in Denmark proper, two in the Faroes and two in Greenland. The elections were called on 5 October following an ultimatum to the government by the Social Liberals due to the outcome of a report on the 2020 Danish mink cull by the Mink Commission, which was critical of the government. Voter turnout was 84% in Denmark, 48% in Greenland, and 71% in the Faroes, with a combined turnout of 84% for the realm as a whole.
Jakob Ellemann-Jensen is a Danish former politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Denmark and Minister of Defence under Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen from 2022 to 2023. He led the Venstre party from 2019 to 2023.
The Independent Greens – Denmark's New Left-Wing Party, or simply the Independent Greens (Q), is a left-wing political party in Denmark. It was founded 7 September 2020 by four former members of The Alternative: Sikandar Siddique, Uffe Elbæk, and Susanne Zimmer, who were members of the Danish parliament, and Niko Grünfeld, member of Copenhagen City Council. The party leader is Sikandar Siddique. Elbæk was founder and leader of The Alternative from 2013 to 2020.

A referendum on the abolition of the defence opt-out, one of the country's opt-outs from the European Union, was held in Denmark on 1 June 2022. The referendum was announced on 6 March 2022 following a broad multi-party defence agreement reached during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The referendum resulted in the "Yes" side winning with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
The Frederiksen II Cabinet is the current Government of Denmark, which took office on 15 December 2022. It succeeded the Frederiksen I Cabinet following the 2022 general election.
