The play was originally called Duologue. Rattigan's biographer wrote that in the play Rattigan "returned to his theme of the two loves, spiritual and sexual, and the despair that the failure to achieve either can bring. His protagonist only realised she loved her husband after his death, and was blaming herself for denying him the sexual pleasures that she knew he wanted." [1]
