Allison Dabbs Garrett (born 1964) is an American attorney,inventor,educator,and the chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. [1] She previously served as the 17th president of Emporia State University from January 2016 to October 2021,and prior to her time at Emporia State,Garrett served as Abilene Christian University's executive vice president,a position she held from August 20,2012,to December 23,2015. [2] Garrett has held several vice president positions in both education and the private sector.
Born and raised in Neosho,Missouri,Garrett graduated from Oklahoma Christian College as an English major in 1984,as well as the University of Tulsa's College of Law in 1987 with her Doctor of Jurisprudence. Her Master of Laws degree came from the Georgetown University's Law Center in 1992. [3]
While attending Georgetown Law,Garrett worked at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 1988 to 1991 as a staff attorney. [4] In 1994,Garrett moved to Bentonville,Arkansas to work for Walmart Stores,Inc.,where she served as vice president and general counsel for the corporate division and as vice president of benefits compliance and planning. [5] Garrett also holds a U.S. patent for a media disk holder,granted in 2003. [6]
After spending a decade with Walmart,Garrett moved to Montgomery,Alabama to serve as an assistant professor of law at Faulkner University's Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. Three years later in April 2007,Garrett was named Oklahoma Christian University's senior vice president for academic affairs in Oklahoma City,Oklahoma. [7] While at Oklahoma Christian,Garrett oversaw the colleges,the school's library,the Honors program,and various other programs. [8]
On August 20,2012,Garrett began her three-and-a-half-year term at Abilene Christian University. While at ACU,Garrett oversaw the financial operations,enrollment,and marketing,as well as the university's facilities. Garrett also worked with academics,advancement and athletics,as well as chairing several university committees. [9] On October 22,2015,Garrett was named Emporia State University's 17th president. [10] She began her work as ESU's president in January 2016. [11]
During her time at Emporia State,Garrett helped Emporia State achieve increased enrollment in the graduate school,set fundraising records for the university,and helped oversee projects including an aquatic research center,a new house for the university president,a new tennis complex,and a new residence hall. [12] As ESU president,she served as vice chair of the NCAA Board of Governors and as chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents’Council.
On September 24,2021,she was named the first woman and ninth chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. [13] Garrett leads a state system comprising 25 state colleges and universities,11 constituent agencies,one university center,and independent colleges and universities coordinated with the state system. She reports to a constitutional board whose nine members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. Garrett directs 20 statewide scholarship programs,including the Oklahoma's Promise scholarship program,and statewide GEAR UP efforts. She was appointed by Gov. Kevin Stitt in November 2021 to serve a three-year term as an Oklahoma designee to the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). In April 2024,Garrett was named by The Journal Record as one of Oklahoma's Most Admired CEOs. [14] In November 2024,Garrett received the Oklahoma National Guard's Oklahoma Thunderbird Medal,which is the highest honor presented to a civilian. [15]
Emporia State University is a public university in Emporia,Kansas,United States. Established in March 1863 as the Kansas State Normal School,Emporia State is the third-oldest public university in the state of Kansas. Emporia State is one of six public universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents.
The National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF) is a non-profit organization that honors exceptional school teachers. It was founded in 1989 by Emporia State University,the ESU Alumni Association,the City of Emporia,Emporia Public Schools,and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce. The NTHF has a museum on Emporia State's campus that honors the teachers inducted. It also has a teacher resource center,and a recognition program,which recognizes five of the nation's most outstanding educators each June. The Hall of Fame annually honors five teachers who have demonstrated commitment and dedication to teaching children. The first induction of five teachers was held in June 1992. To date,155 teachers have been inducted into The National Teachers Hall of Fame representing 37 states and the District of Columbia.
Garin Higgins is an American college football coach and former player. He is the head football coach for Emporia State University,a position he has held since 2007. Higgins previously served as the head football coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University from 2000 to 2004. His Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers finished as runners-up in the NAIA Football National Championship in 2000 and 2003. Higgins worked as co-offensive coordinator at Minnesota State University,Mankato and offensive coordinator at Northeastern State University in 2006.
The Emporia State Hornets are the athletic teams that represent Emporia State University (ESU). The women's basketball and softball teams use the name Lady Hornets. The university's athletic program fields 15 varsity teams in 11 sports all of whom have combined to win 50 conference championships as well as three national championships. Corky the Hornet serves as the mascot representing the teams,and the school colors are black and gold. Emporia State participates in the NCAA Division II and has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) since 1991.

Jory Michael Collins is an American women's college basketball coach currently serving as the head coach for the North Dakota State program. From 2010 until 2018,Collins was the head coach at Emporia State University. Collins led the Emporia State Lady Hornets to eight consecutive winning seasons. Collins is the second winningest coach in Emporia State history with a record of 199–58 (.774).
Brandon Schneider is an American college women's basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Schneider was previously the head coach,from 2010 to 2015,for Stephen F. Austin State University,and from 1998 to 2010 at Emporia State University,an NCAA Division II school located in Emporia,Kansas,where he led the team to the 2010 National Championship.
Brian Shay is a former American football running back,who played for the Emporia State Hornets from 1995 to 1998. While at Emporia State,Shay broke various NCAA records and was the Harlon Hill Trophy winner in 1998. Shay is one of the all-time rushing leaders in the NCAA Division II.

John Andrew Tompkins is an American educator in Kansas. Tompkins was a professor and dean at Pittsburg State University two different times,and served as a superintendent of three different Kansas school districts. Tompkins is also the former Commissioner of the Kansas State Department of Education,serving from June 1,1996 to June 30,2005.
