Allsorts Youth Project is an LGBT youth charity in East Sussex. Founded in 1999 by Jess Wood and James Newton, the project aims to meet the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and unsure youth in Brighton and Hove and the wider East Sussex area.

Contents

History

Since 1999 the project has expanded to meet the develop needs of LGBTU youth. Allsorts has developed to offer 1-2-1 support via a range of mediums, a weekly central drop-in for 16-25 youth and many satellite groups. [3] The project has been funded through various organisations and grants to expand from LGB support to include trans and gender questioning young people.

Mission

Allsorts works to raise awareness, promote good practice and facilitate the creation of safer and more supportive environments for LGBT young people in the wider community. [4]

Support Groups

Allsorts have a number of satellite groups that support their main drop-in: [5] [6]

Allsorts recently expanded the capacity of their trans* and gender questioning young people's group 'Transformers' with funding from the Rainbow Fund [8]

Peer education

Allsorts Youth Projects runs a 'peer education' programme which involves trained workers alongside young people at the project facilitating workshops in schools, colleges and youth projects. Started in 2005, the programme, the workshops explore the impact of homo/bi/trans-phobic language on young people. The programme has been identified as good practice by Stonewall. [9] Brighton & Hove council acknowledged the large collaborative role Allsort Peer Education has played in the city council being named to in the country in Stonewall's Education Equality Index. [10]

Resources

Allsorts have produced numerous resources, including a mental health support and resource booklet for LGBT Youth called 'Healthy Heads and Hearts'. An anthology of writings by LGB youth called 'Deep Blue Sea'. [11] They have also produced resources on Gay/Bi/Trans men's sexual health and HIV awareness, and a leaflet on 'Sex, Love & Coming Out' [12]

Campaigns

Young People's Voice is the youth campaigning and engagement project at Allsorts for LGBT Youth. [13] They have done annual campaigns for IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homo/BI/Trans-phobia). For IDAHOBIT the group presented their 'Global Voices' campaign at Brighton's Old Stiene. [14] On 5 February 2013, they launched the first annual LGBT Children, Young People and Families Day with: a Tea Party for CVS groups, practitioners, an LGBT + Allies Youth Prom and a Champions Dinners to showcase the project. [15] The Day was covered by ITV Meridian news, with a feature article and interview on their website. [16] The Day was supported by Mental Health Promotion, Rainbow Fund, Moshi Moshi, Hotel du Vin and Hilton Metropole. [17]

Funding

Allsorts have been funded by numerous large organisations over the years. Including Children in Need which highlighted the work they do in a video interview. [18] For 2012-2013 are one Brighton & Hove Mayor's chosen charities to support alongside The Marlets Hospice and Brighton Women's Centre [19]

Awards

The project is led by the Project Director Jess Wood who in 2012 was awarded an MBE for her services for working with young LGBT people through the charity. [20] Their volunteering group Young People's Voice won best regional volunteering group team for the South East from vInspired for their Peer Educators programme. [21] They also received the 'Working Together' award from the Brighton and Hove Council LGBT Workers Forum as part of their History Awards 2012 for their work in schools with Peer Education. [22]

Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (FFLAG) is a voluntary organisation and registered charity in the United Kingdom which offers support to parents and their lesbian/gay/bisexual and transgender children. They have a national telephone helpline as well as several parent support groups and are a support group recognised by the UK Government. FFLAG also works outside the UK with other LGBT family support organisations particularly in Europe.

Educational Action Challenging Homophobia (EACH) is a charity based in the United Kingdom which "affirms the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people and reduces discrimination experienced because of sexual orientation or gender identity." Since 2003, EACH has delivered training and consultancy services on sexuality and gender identity matters across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors. It also provides support to those affected by homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying through its nationwide, freephone helpline.

LGBT movements in the United States comprise an interwoven history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied social movements in the United States of America, beginning in the early 20th century. A commonly stated goal among these movements is social equality for LGBT people. Some have also focused on building LGBT communities or worked towards liberation for the broader society from biphobia, homophobia, and transphobia. LGBT movements organized today are made up of a wide range of political activism and cultural activity, including lobbying, street marches, social groups, media, art, and research. Sociologist Mary Bernstein writes: "For the lesbian and gay movement, then, cultural goals include challenging dominant constructions of masculinity and femininity, homophobia, and the primacy of the gendered heterosexual nuclear family (heteronormativity). Political goals include changing laws and policies in order to gain new rights, benefits, and protections from harm." Bernstein emphasizes that activists seek both types of goals in both the civil and political spheres.

Various issues in medicine relate to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. According to the US Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), besides HIV/AIDS, issues related to LGBT health include breast and cervical cancer, hepatitis, mental health, substance use disorders, alcohol use, tobacco use, depression, access to care for transgender persons, issues surrounding marriage and family recognition, conversion therapy, refusal clause legislation, and laws that are intended to "immunize health care professionals from liability for discriminating against persons of whom they disapprove."

The history of LGBT residents in California, which includes centuries prior to the 20th, has become increasingly visible recently with the successes of the LGBT rights movement. In spite of the strong development of early LGBT villages in the state, pro-LGBT activists in California have campaigned against nearly 170 years of especially harsh prosecutions and punishments toward gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people.

In the past 50 years, advocate organizations for LGBTQ content in libraries have emerged, and numerous theorists have discussed various aspects of LGBTQ library service including privacy concerns, programming, collection development considerations and librarian/staff education needs, as well as special services for juvenile and teen patrons.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LGBT Foundation</span>

LGBT Foundation is a national charity based in Manchester with a wide portfolio of services. With a history dating back to 1975, it campaigns for a fair and equal society where all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people are able to reach their full potential. They support over 40,000 people directly every year, and a further 600,000 online. They provide direct services and resources to more LGBT people than any other charity of its kind in the UK.

The LGB Alliance is a British nonprofit advocacy group founded in 2019, in opposition to the policies of LGBT rights charity Stonewall on transgender issues. Its founders are Bev Jackson, Kate Harris, Allison Bailey, Malcolm Clark and Ann Sinnott. The organisation has said that lesbians are facing "extinction" because of the "disproportionate" focus on transgender identities in schools.
