Alok Joshi was the former Secretary of Research and Analysis Wing. [1]
Hailing from Lucknow,he graduated from Jawaharlal Nehru University,(JNU),completed his postgraduation in political science [2] and then joined the Indian Police Service (IPS),Haryana cadre in 1976. [3] He rose through his ranks and later in 2005 became the joint director of Intelligence Bureau,the internal intelligence agency of India. In 2010 he was appointed as a Special Secretary at R&AW. He took over as Secretary (R) on 30 December 2012. [4] Joshi and Amitabh Mathur of 1977 batch of Manipur and Tripura,IPS cadre were the main contendants for the top spot. Mathur had joined R&AW in 1981 and switched from IPS to RAS cadre. However the Prime Minister-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (India) chose Joshi over Mathur because of his seniority. Ashok Chaturvedi,IPS was the chief of India's external intelligence agency the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) from 1 February 2007 to 31 January 2009. Chaturvedi succeeded P.K.H. Tharakan,a 1968 batch officer of the IPS Kerala cadre who retired on 31 January 2007.
Krishan Chander Verma was the Director of Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW),the external intelligence agency of India,his official designation was Secretary (R). He did his schooling from Mayo College,Ajmer. He belongs to the 1971 Jharkhand IPS cadre. He started his career at the Intelligence Bureau,was appointed as head of the Narcotics Control Bureau in 2005,and was later elevated to the position of Secretary (Security) and also served as Internal Security Adviser to Home Minister. He was laterally transferred to head R&AW after Ashok Chaturvedi retired from the post on 31 January 2009. One of the major challenges for K. C. Verma had been professionalise and streamline the agency,which has been in news in recent times for various scandals and controversies.
Bahukutumbi Raman,also referred to as B. Raman,was an Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Government of India and head of the counter-terrorism division of the Research and Analysis Wing. Until his death in 2013,he was the director of the Institute for Topical Studies,Chennai. B. Raman was also a contributor to the South Asia Analysis Group (SAAG). As a former intelligence official,B. Raman regularly wrote about security,counter-terrorism and military issues regarding India and South Asia. He was considered one of India's foremost security experts.
Sanjeev Tripathi is member of the BJP and former Secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing. Tripathi is the son-in-law of Former R&AW secretary,G.S. Bajpai,and comes from a family of Bareilly,Uttar Pradesh. A keen sportsman,he topped the civil service exam in 1972,and joined the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Few years later,he switched to RAW,resigning from the IPS,and was absorbed in the Research &Analysis Service (RAS),which feeds the ranks of RAW. Mr. Tripathi is the first Secretary (R) to be from the RAS cadre in its more than four-decade history.
Vikram Sood is the former head of India's foreign intelligence agency,the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW),and an advisor to the Observer Research Foundation,an independent public policy think tank in New Delhi. Sood was an officer of the Indian Postal Service (IPoS) before he joined the intelligence organisation R&AW and later served as its spymaster from 2000 to 2003. He retired as a career intelligence officer with 31 years of service on 31 March 2003.
Rajinder Khanna is the former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing,the external intelligence agency of India. He joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1978 and was allotted to Odisha cadre. From 1979 to 1985,he held several important posts including Superintendent of Police in Puri and Ganjam districts in Odisha. As the Superintendent of Police in Puri,he received a number of commendations from the Chief Minister for eradicating dacoity in the district.
Director General (DG) is the head of the Indian National Security Guard (NSG),the federal contingency deployment force that was created to deal with terrorism in India. Anil Dhasmana is the Current Chief of National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO). He was also the Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW),India's foreign intelligence service. He was appointed as the Chief of R&AW as the post fell vacant on 31 January 2017 following the retirement of the incumbent.
Rajiv Jain was the Director of the Intelligence Bureau of India. He belonged to 1980 batch of the Indian Police Service. He is from the Jharkhand cadre and was appointed on 1 January 2017 as the 26th Director of Intelligence Bureau after the retirement of Dineshwar Sharma.
Rajiv Mathur is a 1972 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh Cadre. He is a former Chief Information Commissioner of India. He served Uttar Pradesh Police since 1972 until becoming the Director of Intelligence Bureau. He also served as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau from January 2009 to December 2010.
The Unending Game:A Former R&AW Chief's Insights into Espionage is a 2018 book by Vikram Sood,former head of India's foreign intelligence agency,the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). According to Sood his book is not a memoir but a beginner’s guide in intelligence and espionage. Sood tries to clarify that the real world of espionage is not like James Bond movies and much more than just "cloak and dagger" operations;with John le Carre's novels about George Smiley being a better comparison to the reality. The book further gives insights into the methods of intelligence collection and espionage and the relevance in the scope of a country's national interests.
Samant Kumar Goel is an Indian civil servant working as an intelligence officer and is of the IPS cadre. He is the current Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing,India's foreign intelligence agency. He was appointed as the Chief of R&AW on 26 June 2019 replacing Anil Dhasmana. In June 2022,his tenure as Secretary,R&AW was extended upto 30th June,2023.
Arvind Kumar,a 1984 (37RR) batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer,is the former Director of the Intelligence Bureau. The Director of the Intelligence Bureau is the senior-most ranked IPS officer.
Tapan Kumar Deka commonly known as Tapan Deka is the 28th Director of Intelligence Bureau of India. Deka is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1988 (41RR),Deka was empanelled as Director general of police level in 2021. Deka's tenure as the Director of Intelligence Bureau started from 1 July as his predecessor Arvind Kumar's tenure ended on June 30,2022.
