Alor is one of the seven communities comprising the Idemili South Local Government of Anambra State in the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. [1] It is surrounded by seven neighbouring towns, namely Oraukwu, Nnobi, Abatete, Ideani, Uke, Adazi Ani and Nnokwa.[ citation needed ] Alor has several rivers which names in most cases are derived from the major idol of the village touched by the river – Mmili Ezigbo, Mmili Nwangene, Mmili Ọhọsha, Mmili Ideọhwọlọ, Mmili Iyiogwgwu, and Mmili Ọbịaja.[ citation needed ]

Physical Environment

Alor town is located within the triangle formed by the three main towns of Anambra State. Conceptually straightening out the roads connecting the towns, the northern side of the triangle is the Onitsha – Awka road, whether the expressway or the old Enugu – Onitsha road. The eastern or southeastern edge of the triangle is the connection from Awka through Agulu or Nimo, Neni, Oraukwu, Adazi Ani, Nnokwa, and Nnobi to Nnewi. The third side is Onitsha to Nnewi. Alor happens to still continue to be protected from that undesirable type of urbanization. Umuoji, Ojoto, Uke, Ideani and Abatete serve very well as such a buffer.[ citation needed ]

Infrastructure

Alor has several functional road system that primes it from the surrounding communities, adequate water reticulation and street lights that grace the town at night. [ citation needed ] The main market day in Alor is NKWO, and on that day, traders from the villages and from neighboring towns converge at the market square (Nkwo-Alor) to trade.[ citation needed ] There is also a best hotel in Alor [2]

Government

The Traditional government of Alor consists of the Igwe (King) followed by the Ndi-Ichie (Lords), Ndi-Idi, Ndi-Ozo (orzor), Ndi-Nze (Dukes) and other titled individuals and groups E.g.:, Umu-Nna, Umu-Ada, Otu Ogbo (Age Group), Ndi-Ikom, Ndi-Nne etc. However, there are other special sceptered branches that enforce order, they are:- the Igwe-In-Council, Alor Peoples Convention (APC), Alor Development Union (ADU), the vigilante groups etc. [3]

In October 2020, there was a tussle for the throne. Igwe MacAnthony Okonkwo was temporarily dethroned by the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano for a political misconduct, [4] this led to the uprising of a new king named Igwe Chukwumesili. This was later resolved by the government of Anambra State [5]

Alor town has two divisions, Ezi and Ifite, corresponding to the names of the two sons of the original ancestor – Agbudugbu. Each division consists of three villages as follows:

Ezi: – Umuoshi, Etiti, and Ebenesii-Okebunoye and Ifite: – Uruezeani, Umuokwu and Ide. Each of the six villages of Alor consists of a number of quarters. Based on such factors as population, affinity, or some historical relationship, the quarters have been grouped, or in some cases left single, and each such group of quarters or single quarter referred to as an ‘Ichie Domain’. The name by which each Ichie is designated is symbolic of the geographical setting or the traditional, historical, or social experience, traits and emotions characteristic of the various localities and the people of Alor.

The Alor has numerous educated sons and daughters that are employed in manifold industries and trades both in Alor, Nigeria and overseas. Moreover, Animal husbandry, Block industries, Printing Press, Wine depot (palm wine), Palm oil mills, and Soap industries are among the few industries that can be found in Alor.[ citation needed ]

Education

Alorites originally are business men and women measured in textile materials, but today, many are educated and practicing professionals.[ citation needed ] Alor was known with a slogan "Alor London" even before major civilization came into the town and ever since, it lives up to the name.[ citation needed ]but due to the crisis which has divided the community leading to lack of Electricity supply and other basic amenities, It's London status has changed to Alor Burundi signalling underdevelopment.

Alor is home to numerous nursery schools with seven primary schools and two high schools, plus other higher institutions like commercial colleges and evangelical seminaries.[ citation needed ]

Culture

The culture of Alor is equivalent to its neighboring communities which are in turn consistent with general Igbo culture.[ citation needed ]

Alor has multiple churches and denominations: Roman Catholic(St Mary's and St Charles), Anglican(St Paul's, Umuoshi and St Andrews Umuokwu, Alor), Save The Lost Mission, Deeper life, Cherubim and Seraphim, Dominion City Church, Grace of God Assemblies, Odozi-Obodo, Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), Sabbath churches etc.[ citation needed ]

It has boundaries with Abatete, Abacha, Nimo Owelle, Abagana, Ogidi, and Umunachi. Eziowelle is made up of five villages which are Umuikwele, Umunnama, Ezinimo, Okpaliko, and Ubulu. According to Peter Emelumgini, in his book, A Compendium Knowledge of Eziowelle, "the first people to settle in Eziowelle were the Uruojukwu and Uruogbuefi of Umuikwelle ... before Umuikwelle Etiti migrated from Ifite-Ikwele and settled, with the originals. In Umunnama, the Uruezenebo were the originals, or settled earlier before others came from Umunoha of Port Harcourt side. In Ezinimo village, the Umu-oba,Umuoradigwo,Umu-Chidobelu-Ezeokobu, Umuagu, Uruama, Umudimatuand Umuawa settled earlierthan others before others came from Isi-Uzo Nsukka side when they were driven and scattered as a result of tribal wars. Some others later joined the village from other locations when they were driven out of the town as a result of misunderstanding and constant quarrelling from their relatives and that made them move and settle with the early settlers." The last two villages which are Okpaliko and Ubulu are believed to have migrated from Nteje, a town in the Anambra State of Nigeria between the 18th and 19th centuries. The town is ruled by a traditional ruler called "Igwe" as obtainable in other neighboring Igbo-speaking towns. The Igwe of Eziowelle is also called the Owelle of Eziowelle after Owelle the great ancestor of Eziowelle. The current Owelle of Eziowelle is Igwe Mike Okonkwo Etusi..The first OWelle of Eziowelle, Igwe Christian C. Anene relinquished the throne to the Owelle 2, after his death in 1990. The current Onowu of Eziowelle is Obi J. Akukwe.

Abacha is a town in Anambra State in the southeastern part of Nigeria. It is bordered by Abatete, Nimo, Oraukwu and Eziowelle towns. Its people are among the Igbo-speaking communities in the eastern part of Nigeria. Nnama is the name of an Igbo Royal family from Nibo, Awka South LGA, in Anambra State, Nigeria. Other variations include Nnama-Orjiakor. They are part of the Umu-eleh/ Umu ele clan (umunna) in Umuenechi, Umuanum, Nibo. This clan is part of the greater Umu-Nzekwe clan.

Nkpor is a town in Idemili North local government area of Anambra state. The town of Nkpor had an estimated population of 109,377 in 2007. It is attached to the much larger city of Onitsha to the west, Oze to the north, Ogidi and Umuoji to the east, and Obosi to the south. The name 'Nkpor' is derived from the adulteration of the Igbo word nkpogha meaning 'repositioning'.Nkpor is known for its farming prowess. There is a maize known as ‘akpu aka Nkpor’ because of its robust yield and is reminiscent of Nkpor men who are often muscular. In ancient times, a rich man is known in Nkpor for his rich yam barn and the number of animals in his pen. An average Nkpor indigene does not buy foodstuff in the market and does not deny his visitors food. Nkpor is a traditional Community that worshiped the God of their ancestors before the advent of Christianity.

Abatete is a Town in Anambra State in Nigeria. Abatete is bordered by Uke, Ogidi, Abacha, Oraukwu, Alor, Ideani, Nimo Owelle, Eziowelle, Umuoji. It is located in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. It is made up of four villages namely : Agbaja, Nsukwu, Ogbu and Odida. Its people are one of the Igbo speaking peoples of Eastern Nigeria. Abatete, like most Igbo communities, has a rich cultural heritage.

The Umuoji people are those whose roots can be traced to the town of Umuoji, in Idemili North - a local government area in Anambra State, Nigeria. These people are from Igbo speaking ethnic group, whose early history is adversely affected by a lack of, or non-existent, written records. Umuoji is bounded by Ogidi, Ojoto, Uke, Abatete and Nkpor and has an estimated population of 80,000 people which includes local residents in its 23 villages and citizens in diaspora.

Umunya is an Olu Town and one of the five communities that make up Oyi Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State Nigeria. It is bordered by six neighbors: Ifite-Dunu, Awkuzu, Nteje, Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Ogbunike, and Umudioka. In the south lies Umudioka and Ifite-Dunu, both in Dunukofia LGA. In the north, Nteje and Nkwelle-Ezunaka. In the east, Awkuzu and in the west, Ogbunike. The boundaries are naturally demarcated by streams except at the border with Nkwelle-Ezunaka where an expanse of Umunya heath namely, Oli-Omoto, Ogwugwu-Obo, Ugwueze, etc. crossed the Kpokili River. Nearly all ten villages of Umunya have their own fresh water springs. The town has fertile lands; hence, its economy is based on agriculture.

Anambra State Library Board (ANSLB), is a Nigerian-established Library Board that manages all the public libraries in Anambra State. It is situated along Awka – Enugu express road by Aroma junction in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. Its headquarter is located at Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library, Awka. It has eleven public libraries, comprising three Divisional libraries with seven Branch/Community libraries and the headquarter that houses the Library Board – Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library, Awka. The State Library Board has won awards for the Best Public Library in Nigeria for three consecutive years, earning it another award for the Ever Green Public Library in Nigeria
