Aluka (band)

Aluka is an Australian band, based in Melbourne and consisting of three vocalists Rachael Head, Sally Mortensen and Annabelle Tunley. The band formed in 2008 after the members met studying music performance. [1] Their music is usually classified as a cappella, but is unusual for the genre as they co-write and perform original music, with pop, hip hop and R&B elements. Also unusually, Aluka's vocal harmonies are constructed without using music theory, often straying from a typical harmonic structure to produce sounds not generally associated with standard a cappella. History

The band played their first show at the Northcote Social Club. They have since played a range of venues and festivals across Australia, including the Sydney Opera House, Queenscliff Music Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival [3] and Apollo Bay Music Festival. [4]

Recordings

Aluka released their debut, self-titled, 5 track EP in 2009. [5] Their debut album 'Space' was released on 5 April 2013. [6] Space was produced by Nick Huggins, who has previously worked with Kid Sam and Oscar + Martin. [7] 'Keep My Cool', the first single from the album, was launched in Melbourne on 7 November. [8] The release featured a remix of 'Keep My Cool' by Oscar Key Sung. [9] The album was launched with shows across Australia in April and May 2013. [7]

Locations

‘Space' was recorded in a number of unusual locations in Victoria, each paired with a track on the album to complement that song. [1]

Back-up vocals

Though not performing as Aluka, Head, Mortensen and Tunley have also performed together as back-up singers for other Australian artists. In 2010 the trio recorded backing vocals on Clare Bowditch's album Modern Day Addiction, as part of her band The New Slang. [20] They toured with Bowditch in 2009 and 2010. They have also performed with Lisa Mitchell and Missy Higgins. [21]

The John Butler Trio are an Australian roots/rock band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler, an APRA and ARIA-award-winning musician. They formed in Fremantle in 1998 with Jason McGann on drums, Gavin Shoesmith on bass and John Butler on vocals. By 2009, the trio consisted of Butler with Byron Luiters on bass and Nicky Bomba on drums and percussion, the latter being replaced by Grant Gerathy in 2013. After both Luiters and Gerathy exited the trio in early 2019, bassist OJ Newcomb and drummer Terepai Richmond joined the band, accompanied by touring musician Elana Stone on keyboards, percussion and backing vocals.

The Guild League were an Australian indie pop band which included material from rap style to a cappella works. They were led by Tali White on lead vocals, initially as a side project, from 2001. They released three albums Private Transport (2002), Inner North (2004) and Speak Up (2008). In 2012 the group disbanded but occasionally reformed for one-off performances.

Andy Bull is an Australian alt-pop singer-songwriter and producer, based in Sydney. He is best known for his singles "Dog", "Keep on Running" and "Baby I Am Nobody Now"; as well as his prolific Australian touring.

Kraak & Smaak is a musical production trio from the town of Leiden, Netherlands, consisting of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug. The three began recording in 2003. Their first album, titled Boogie Angst, was released in the UK 2006, and they began performing at music festivals and at clubs in the US and UK. Their songs were played on the radio and were used in television shows. Their second album, released in 2008, was titled Plastic People. They won an EBBA. Their third album, Electric Hustle, was released in 2011.

Cannot Buy My Soul: The Songs of Kev Carmody, or more simply Cannot Buy My Soul, is a 2007 double-CD compilation tribute album featuring various artists performing tracks by Australian singer-songwriter Kev Carmody. They were brought together by rock musician, Paul Kelly, who also performs on a track. Artists include Dan Kelly, the John Butler Trio, the Waifs and Clare Bowditch.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">London Grammar</span> British indie pop band

London Grammar are an English indie pop band formed in Nottingham in 2009. The band consists of Hannah Reid, Dan Rothman and Dominic “Dot” Major. Their debut extended play, Metal & Dust, was released in February 2013 by Metal & Dust Recordings, while their debut album, If You Wait, was released a few months later in September. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Double Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
