Aly Jetha is a Canadian children's television creator, producer, director and writer, as well as co-founder and CEO of Big Bad Boo Studios and Oznoz.com, a multilingual educational VOD service for children. [1]

Early life and education

Jetha was born in Zambia and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1974. He grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he graduated from St. George's School. In 1992, Jetha earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of British Columbia. After working for the United Nations and representing Canada at Parliamentarians for Global Action, he pursued legal studies and obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Berkeley Law School at the University of California, specialising in corporate and international law. Career

Jetha became a member of the California Bar and worked as a management consultant at Bain & Company. He later shifted into entrepreneurship, founding four companies in industries such as semiconductors and telecommunications. [3]

In 2006, Jetha co-founded Norooz Productions with his wife, Shabnam Rezaei, [4] which later evolved into Big Bad Boo in 2007. The studio specializes in creating multicultural children's content, using entertainment to teach culture and language. [5]

Jetha has produced children's' cartoon series 1001 Nights, [6] Mixed Nutz, 16 Hudson, [7] Galapagos X and the Hulu Original series The Bravest Knight , the first children's series with an LGBT protagonist which featured all-star cast including RuPaul, Wanda Sykes, Christine Baranski, T. R. Knight, Bobby Moynihan, Storm Reid and Wilson Cruz. [8]

In 2019, Jetha also produced the short film Balloon Girl, which was a finalist in the PBS Online Film Fest. Set in Stadtpark, Vienna, the short film was part of London-based Hope Works Project, a series of short films to inspire kindness, understanding and hope in children around the world. [9]

In 2020, The Bravest Knight won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids and Family Programming as well as the MIP Jr. Diversity in Entertainment Awards. [10] He was named one of Washington State's Top 40 Under 40 in 2002 and again in Vancouver's Top 40 Under 40 in 2009. [11]

UNICEF and international development work

He has been involved with UNICEF and received the WISE Award for his contributions to educational initiatives. In 2018, he was inducted into the Million Lives Collective for his work that improved the lives of over one million people living on less than $5 per day. [12]

The film was made to teach children about the Persian New Year Norooz, celebrating the coming of spring and is about a little boy named Babak who is stuck between being Iranian and being American. Through a dream and magical visit by Amoo norooz, Babak learns to be proud of his heritage and celebrates the New Year with his family.

Mixed Nutz is a Canadian animated cartoon series produced by Big Bad Boo Studios. The show is about a group of friends from different backgrounds in a fictional town called Dyvercity. The main characters are Babak from Iran, Sanjay from India, Adele from Austria, Damaris from Cuba and Jae from Korea. The show has been referred to as "International" Peanuts for the simplicity of the animation style and its multicultural angle.

Mercury Filmworks is a Canadian independent animation studio based in Ottawa, Ontario. The studio was originally founded in Vancouver by Clint Eland, the current CEO, in 1997. Mercury Filmworks has produced animated television series and feature films for a variety of companies, including Disney, Netflix, Amazon Studios, and Warner Bros. <i>Dino Dana</i> Canadian childrens television series

Dino Dana is a Canadian television series created and directed by J. J. Johnson. The series was developed as a follow-up to Dino Dan: Trek's Adventures and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 27, 2017. Dino Dana: The Movie was released on Prime Video in September 2020. It was originally going to be a theatrical release on March 21, 2020, but was delayed and later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. A new spin-off of Dino Dana, titled Dino Dex, debuted in October 2024.

<i>The Bravest Knight</i> Canadian animated series

The Bravest Knight is a Canadian animated television series, produced by Big Bad Boo Studios and a Hulu original which became the first kids original on the streaming service. The first episodes were added to the streaming service on June 21, 2019 and the other eight on October 11, 2019. The show, which was created by Daniel Errico, and directed by Shabnam Rezaei. It is a fantasy and adventure story focused on how a young kid and pumpkin farmer turned into the "bravest knight" through wild adventures across the lands, which he tells his adopted daughter. The series is one of the first all-ages animations to have an "openly gay main character".

Mofy is a stop-motion animated children's television series of shorts. The series is a co-production between Associati Audiovisivi (with their animation brand Misseri Studio and Sony Creative Products in collaboration with Rai Fiction. ZDF Enterprises joined as co-producer in Series 2.

ABC with Kenny G is a Canadian animated series developed and produced at Big Bad Boo Studios in Vancouver. The musical ABC series is a spin-off from 16 Hudson. The series is about Kensington, Lili's cat from 16 Hudson, who dresses up as a singer and goes down to the Milk & Cookies Jazz club at night, when the humans are sleeping, to teach his animal friends the ABCs. Marcus Mosley is the main performer in the role of Kensington. He is a gospel singer based in Vancouver.
