American Bridge 21st Century or AB PAC [2] is a liberal American Super PAC and opposition research group that supports Democratic candidates and opposes Republican candidates. [1] [3] It was founded by David Brock in 2010 and is associated with Media Matters for America.

Contents

American Bridge 21st Century is an opposition research hub for the Democratic Party. [4] The group physically tracks and monitors Republican candidates and officials and uses social media to deploy its findings.

According to Politico , American Bridge 21st Century is "one of the largest and most public facing organizations affiliated with the Democratic Party." In 2020, the group spent $73 million, "making it one of the most prolific outside spenders on either side of the aisle." [1] In 2024, the group expanded to target U.S. House candidates for the first time; it had previously focused only on presidential races, the U.S. Senate, and state races like governorships. American Bridge 21st Century plans to spend $140 million on ads attacking Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Methods

In 2013, American Bridge PAC employed over 50 trackers to follow and record Republican candidates across the country. [5] These trackers are equipped with high-tech recording gear and are assigned Republican targets to follow and record. According to The New York Times , the organization "aims to record every handshake, every utterance by Republican candidates ... looking for gotcha moments that could derail political ambitions or provide fodder for television advertisements by liberal groups." [6] USA Today described the group's goal as "uncovering an unguarded moment, a controversial position, a gaffe or flip-flop, anything that can be used to torpedo a political foe's campaign." [7] The organization compiles opposition research dossiers on the Republican candidates they are targeting. The group's opposition dossier on Mitt Romney was 2,500 pages long. It has attempted to tie Republican candidates to the political activities of the Koch brothers. [8]

In 2016, American Bridge discovered that the Trump Institute's book was plagiarized, with at least 20 pages coming from a 1995 Success article. [9] In 2018, it spent $20.9 million, mostly on employee salaries including the opposition researchers. [10]

In January 2024, American Bridge 21st Century announced plans to spend $140 million on an anti-Donald Trump advertising campaign designed to appeal to working class women in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. [11] In May 2024, as part of this advertising campaign, the group spent $25 million on ads criticizing Trump on abortion policy. [12] [13]

Donors

American Bridge PAC is largely funded by wealthy Democratic donors, labor unions, and other PACs (Sixteen Thirty Fund/Arabella Advisors). The largest donors of the 2020 United States presidential election cycle include billionaire Stephen Mandel, [14] Bain Capital co-founder Joshua Bekenstein, [15] real estate Titan George M. Marcus, [16] and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. In past election cycles billionaire George Soros and others helped the then fledging Super PAC in 2012. [17] [18]

Christopher Joseph LaCivita is an American political consultant, and partner in FP1 Strategies, a national public-affairs and campaign firm. LaCivita is currently a senior advisor to Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.

Club for Growth Action is an independent-expenditure only committee or Super PAC with a stated mission of "defeating big-government politicians and replacing them with pro-growth, limited government conservatives." Club for Growth Action spends money running political advertising campaigns in congressional races throughout the country.

The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) is a Super PAC dedicated to electing Republicans to the U.S. House of Representatives. The Super PAC, which was closely linked to former House Speaker John Boehner and House GOP leadership, was founded in 2011 and spent nearly $10 million in the 2012 cycle electing Republican candidates. Following Boehner's resignation from the U.S. Congress and the election of Paul D. Ryan as Speaker of the House, Congressional Leadership Fund became closely linked to Ryan.

Richard Ellis Uihlein and Elizabeth Uihlein are American billionaire businesspeople, founders of Uline and conservative donors. Richard is also an heir to the Schlitz brewing fortune.

Hillary Clinton is an American politician from the state of New York who was the Democratic Party's 2016 nominee for president of the United States. Arabella Advisors is a Washington, D.C.-based for-profit consulting company that advises left-leaning donors and nonprofits about where to give money and serves as the hub of a politically liberal "dark money" network. It was founded by former Clinton administration appointee Eric Kessler. The Arabella network spent nearly $1.2 billion in 2020 and raised $1.6 billion that same year. In 2022, Arabella raised $1.3 billion and spent $900 million.

The Sixteen Thirty Fund is a hub of undisclosed political spending on the American Left. The group serves as a fiscal sponsor for other organizations, incubating and financing various progressive projects. According to The New York Times, "The Sixteen Thirty is part of a broader network of progressive nonprofits that donors use to fill specific spaces on the political chessboard." The Sixteen Thirty Fund is administered by Arabella Advisors, a for-profit consulting firm.

America First Policies is an organization created following the inauguration of Donald Trump in 2017 to promote the America First policy agenda of his administration. It was founded by Trump campaign people including Nick Ayers, Rick Gates, and Brad Parscale.

Sean M. Fieler is an American hedge fund manager and political donor known for his backing of religious and conservative causes, especially those aligned with his Catholic faith. He is chair of the American Principles Project, a conservative think tank.
