The State University of New York at Buffalo, commonly referred to as the University at Buffalo (UB) and SUNY-Buffalo, is a public research university with campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York, United States. The university was founded in 1846 as a private medical college and merged with the State University of New York system in 1962. Along with Stony Brook, it is a flagship institution of the SUNY system. As of fall 2020, the university enrolls 32,347 students in 13 schools and colleges, making it the largest public university in the state of New York.

Buffalo began play in 1915 and joined the MAC in 1998. They won their first MAC East Division title in 2009, and won a third MAC East Division title in 2015 along with their first outright MAC Regular-Season championship and first MAC Tournament title to earn the program's first bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The Bulls also have six appearances in the NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Championship between 1957 and 1965 and two appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Their current coach is Jim Whitesell, who was hired in April of 2019 to replace Nate Oats. Home games are played at the 6,783-seat Alumni Arena, which opened in 1982.

At the conclusion of the 2017 season, the program was eliminated by the university.

Cierra Dillard is an American professional basketball player who is currently a free agent. She attended Gates Chili High School in Rochester, New York. She later attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst for two years, before transferring to the University at Buffalo. At both universities, she played on the school's respective women's basketball teams. While playing at Buffalo, Dillard helped the Bulls to back-to-back NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament appearances in 2018 and 2019, including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2018.

In a limited season, which was initially canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic before being reinstated, the Bulls finished the season 6–1, 5–0 in MAC play to win the East Division. They lost to Ball State in the MAC Championship. They received an invite to the Camelia Bowl where they defeated Marshall.
