The high courts of India are the highest courts of appellate jurisdiction in each state and union territory of India. However,a high court exercises its original civil and criminal jurisdiction only if the subordinate courts are not authorized by law to try such matters for lack of peculiar or territorial jurisdiction. High courts may also enjoy original jurisdiction in certain matters,if so designated,especially by the constitution,a state law or union law.

It exercises original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai,as well as extraordinary original jurisdiction,civil and criminal,under the letters patent and special original jurisdiction for the issue of writs under the Constitution of India. Covering 107 acres,the court complex is one of the largest in the world,second only to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. The four-storey administrative building attracts hundreds of litigants every day.
Ritu Raj Awasthi is an Indian Judge. He is served as the Chairperson of 22nd Law Commission of India from 9 November 20222 to 26 March 2024. He was Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court from 11 October 2021 to 2 July 2022. He was a Judge of Allahabad High Court from 13 April 2009 to 10 October 2021. Ritu Raj Awasthi was appointed as Law Commission chairperson on 7 November 2022 and served there till 26 March 2024.On,27 March he was appointed as Judicial Member of Lokpal and served there till 26 March 2029.
