Banwarilal Purohit (born 16 April 1940) [3] is an Indian politician who is serving as 29th Governor of Punjab,India and Administrator of Chandigarh from September 2021. He was the former Governor of Tamil Nadu from 2017 to 2021,and former Governor of Assam from 2016 to 2017. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was a Member of Parliament from the Nagpur (Lok Sabha constituency) three times,twice as an Indian National Congress member,once as a BJP member.
Later he joined Congress. After Indira Gandhi split the Congress Party and formed Congress (Indira),Purohit was elected as MLA from Nagpur East constituency in 1978,contesting as member of Congress(I),and he was re-elected in 1980 from Nagpur South and became a Minister of State for Urban Development,Slum Improvement and Housing in 1982.
In 1984,he was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha as member of Congress Party. [4] He was re-elected in 1989 on Congress ticket.
Later he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party when it launched a movement to build Ram Temple in Ayodhya and contested Lok Sabha elections in 1991 as the BJP candidate. But he lost to Datta Meghe of Indian National Congress. In 1996,he was elected to 11th Lok Sabha as BJP's candidate.
In 1999,he quit the Bharatiya Janata Party to join the Indian National Congress after he developed serious differences with Pramod Mahajan. He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Ramtek in 1999 but lost.
In 2003,he launched his own party called Vidarbha Rajya Party and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur in 2004 but lost.
Later on,he again joined the BJP.
In 2009,he again contested on BJP's ticket but lost the election to Vilas Muttemwar of Indian National Congress.
In August 2016,Purohit was appointed Governor of Assam by replacing Padmanabha Acharya who had additional in-charge of Assam. [5] [6] [7]
On 30 September 2017 he was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu by President Ram Nath Kovind. It was the first time that the state has got a full time governor after K Rosaiah retired in August 2016. [8] [9] [10]
On 27 August 2021 he was appointed the Governor of Punjab (additional charge) and Administrator of Chandigarh (additional charge).[ citation needed ]
On 9 September 2021,Purohit was appointed the 29th Governor of Punjab. Purohit resigned from the post on 3 February 2024 citing personal reasons. [11] But,his resignation has not been accepted yet.
Purohit gained ownership of the Nagpur daily newspaper The Hitavada from Servants of India Society in 1979. The newspaper was launched by Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1911 and Purohit is its current managing editor. He is also the chairman of Shri Ramdeobaba University RBU in Nagpur.
His father's name is Bhagwandas Purohit,he is married to Pushpa Devi Purohit,and he has three children. Two sons Rajendra Purohit and Rakesh Purohit,daughter Meena Purohit Joshi. He has six grandchildren and a great grandson. His eldest granddaughter,Archana Purohit Agrawal is present CEO of eYantra Industries,Hyderabad. He is also the chairman of Bhavans Bhagwandas Purohit Vidya Mandir Nagpur. He is the chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan schools founded by late Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi in 1938.

Subburaman Thirunavukkarasar is an Indian politician. He was the State President of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee till 2 February 2019 and former secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) of the Indian National Congress (INC) party. His introduction to politics in 1977 was facilitated by former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,M. G. Ramachandran. Ramachandran founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 and was facing his first elections for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election in 1977. He identified Thirunavukkarasar,a lawyer by profession,to contest the Aranthangi assembly constituency. Thirunavukkarasar won the seat,aged 27,and was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He continued in that capacity till 1980. Subsequently,he served as Tamil Nadu state minister from 1980 to 1987 in the MGR cabinet,holding portfolios that included Industries,Housing Board,Excise and Handlooms. Later,he became a member of the Lok Sabha –the lower house of the Parliament of India –when he won the erstwhile Pudukottai Lok Sabha constituency. He served as Union Minister of state for shipping and later for telecommunications and information technology.
Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao is an Indian politician from Telangana,associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. He served as Governor of Maharashtra from 2014 to 2019. As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party,he had served as a Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government from 1999. Harikrishnan Nadar Vasanthakumar was an Indian businessman and politician. He was the founder and chairman of Vasanth &Co,one of the largest retail home appliance chains in Tamil Nadu. He was also the founder and managing director of the Tamil satellite TV channel Vasanth TV. He was elected as the member of parliament to the 17th Lok Sabha from Kanyakumari constituency in the 2019 Indian general election. He was also elected as member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Nanguneri constituency in the 2006 and 2016 elections.
The Hitavada is an English daily newspaper circulating mainly in Central parts of India. Founded in 1911 by freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale in Nagpur,the newspaper was taken over by Purohit and Company,owned by Banwarilal Purohit,the former Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Nagpur and former Governor of Punjab. In 2011,it completed its 100 years and celebrated its centenary festival which was inaugurated by Pratibha Patil,then President of India.
C. P. Radhakrishnan is an Indian politician who is the 10th and current Governor of Jharkhand since 2023. He is also holding the additional charge of Governor of Telangana &Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry since 20 March 2024,after the resignation of Tamilisai Soundararajan. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore twice. He was also the former state president of the BJP for Tamil Nadu.

She served as the second Governor of Telangana,and also served as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from 18 February 2021 to 18 March 2024. Sunil Kumar Jakhar is an Indian politician and president of the Bharatiya Janata Party,Punjab unit since 4th July 2023. Previously,Jakhar was the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee from 2017 to 2021. Elected consecutively three times from Abohar Assembly constituency (2002-2017),he was a Leader of the opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012 to 2017. He was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) for five decades until 2022. In May 2022,he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),claiming that he wanted to support "nationalism,unity and brotherhood in Punjab". Earlier,Jakhar was elected as a Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur constituency to the Lok Sabha,the lower house of Indian parliament in a by-election in 2017.

The counting of votes declaration of results was done on 10 March 2022. The Fifteenth Punjab assembly was dissolved on 11 March 2022. The dissolution was necessitated after the results of the election was declared on 10 March. In the Sixteenth Punjab Legislative Assembly,92 members of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party form the treasury benches. The main opposition party in the assembly is Indian National Congress with 18 seats. The other parties which are in opposition are the Shiromani Akali Dal,the Bharatiya Janata Party,the Bahujan Samaj Party and independents. AAP MLA,Kultar Singh Sandhwan was announced as the speaker of the assembly.
The 2024 Indian general election was held in Tamil Nadu on 19 April to elect 39 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The election results were announced on 4 June 2024.
