Brigadier (Dr.) B. D. Mishra is a retired officer of the Indian Army,and presently Lieutenant governor of Ladakh. [2] Previously he held the offices of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh,Governor of Meghalaya &Governor of Mizoram.
Mishra retired from the Indian Army on 31 July 1995,after a career that began as a permanent regular infantry officer,on 17 December 1961. He was born on 20 July 1939.
Mishra was the commander of the NSG (Black Cat Commandos) Counter Hijack Task Force that assaulted the hijacked aircraft of Indian Airlines and successfully executed the rescue operation,at Raja Sansi Airfield,Amritsar,on 24 April 1993. All 124 travellers and crew members were rescued in the operation,after eliminating the hijackers,without any casualty or damage. Mishra received the Prime Minister's appreciation for his role in ending this hijack crisis.

Mishra holds an MA from Allahabad University,an M.Sc from Madras University and a PhD from Jiwaji University,Gwalior. He has five years’postgraduate and graduate level teaching experience in College of Combat at Mhow and in Defence Services Staff College at Wellington. He also holds an LL.B. degree from University of Delhi. [3] [4]
India has several Special Forces (SF) units,with the branches of the Indian Armed Forces having their own separate special forces units. The Indian Army has the Para SF,the Indian Navy has the MARCOS,and the Indian Air Force has the Garud Commando Force. There are other special forces which are not controlled by the military,but operate under civilian organisations,such as the National Security Guard under Home Ministry and Special Group under RAW. Small groups from the military SF units are deputed in the Armed Forces Special Operations Division,a unified command and control structure.

The MARCOS were originally named Indian Marine Special Force,which was later changed to Marine Commando Force to impart "an element of individuality" to it,according to the Indian Navy. Indian Airlines Flight 427,a domestic passenger flight of the Indian Airlines between Srinagar Airport and the Delhi-Indira Gandhi International Airport,was involved in an aircraft hijacking that took place in India between 24 and 25 April 1993. Commandos from the National Security Guard (NSG) rescued all 141 hostages of the Indian Airlines Boeing 737,on the ground at Amritsar airport. The lone hijacker,Mohammad Yousuf,was killed within 5 minutes of commandos entering the plane,before he could react and harm any of the hostages. The rescue was code-named Operation Ashwamedh.
Para (Special Forces),also known as Para Commandos or Para (SF) Commandos,is a group of special forces battalions of the Parachute Regiment in the Indian Army. These units specialize in various roles including counter-terrorism,hostage rescue,unconventional warfare,special reconnaissance,counter-insurgency and direct action.
