Pramod Pandurang Sawant (born Pramod Panduronga Sawant; 24 April 1973) is an Indian politician and ayurveda medical practitioner who has served as the 11th Chief Minister of Goa since March 2019. [1] [2] He represents the Sanquelim constituency in the Goa Legislative Assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2012. [3]

Early life and education

Sawant was born on 24 April 1973 in Mapusa, Goa to Panduronga Govind Sawant (later Pandurang Sawant) [4] and Padminim P. Sawant as Pramod Panduronga Sawant. [5] He obtained a Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery degree from the Ganga Education Society's Ayurvedic Medical College in Kolhapur and a postgraduate degree of Master of Social Work from the Tilak Maharashtra University at Pune. [6]

Political career

Sawant started his electoral career when he contested the 2008 Pale Constituency by-election on Bharatiya Janta Party ticket and lost to Pratap Prabhakar Gauns of Indian National Congress. [7] He contested the 2012 assembly election from Sanquelim constituency. He won the constituency by 14,255 (66.02%) votes defeating Pratap Prabhakar Gauns of the Indian National Congress. He also served as the spokesperson of the Goa unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party for a brief period of time. [8] Later in 2017 he was re-elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly from the same constituency defeating Dharmesh Saglani of the Indian National Congress with 10,058 (43.04%) votes. On 22 March 2017, he was elected as the Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly. [9] [10]

Chief Minister of Goa

After the demise of Manohar Parrikar, the seat of the Chief Minister of Goa fell vacant. Pramod Sawant was elected by the Legislative Assembly afterwards and later he was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Goa on 19 March 2019. [11] [12] [13]

Personal life

Sawant is a Maratha by caste. [11] On 28 May 2005, he married Sulakshana, [14] a teacher of chemistry [15] at the Shri Shantadurga Higher Secondary School in Bicholim. She is also a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and currently the President [16] of the Goa unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha. [17] [18] The couple has a daughter, Parthivi, born in 2006. [19]

Third Manohar Parrikar Ministry is the Council of Ministers in Goa Legislative Assembly headed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Manohar Parrikar was sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Goa state and his government won the vote of confidence in the Goa Legislative Assembly on 16 March 2017. His government won the vote of confidence with the support of 22 MLAs in the 40-member Goa Legislative Assembly. During the trust vote, Parrikar was supported by the 12 MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party, 3 MLAs of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, 3 MLAs of the Goa Forward Party, 3 Independent MLAs and the sole MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party.

Vishwajit Pratapsingh Rane is an Indian politician and a cabinet minister in the Government of Goa headed by Pramod Sawant. He is the son of Pratapsingh Raoji Rane who is a former Chief Minister of Goa and an incumbent Indian National Congress party MLA in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Rane was the Minister of Health, Agriculture & Craftsmen Training in the Government of Goa led by Digambar Kamat from June 2007 to March 2012. Deepak Chandrakant Prabhu Pauskar is an Indian politician. He was elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly from Sanvordem in the 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly election as a member of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. He was named Minister of Public Works and Museum in Pramod Sawant cabinet. Ajgaonkar and Pauskar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2019 thus minimizing Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party to one seat in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Subhash Bhaskar Velingkar is an Indian politician who is a former member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization based in India. He belongs to the Gomantak Maratha Samaj community from Goa. It was under his leadership, Goa Prant of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was formed.

Pale Vidhan Sabha Constituency was one of the 40 Goa Legislative Assembly constituencies of the state of Goa in southern India. Pale was also one of the 20 constituencies falling under North Goa Lok Sabha constituency.
