Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank" (born 15 July 1959), [2] is an Indian politician from Bhartiya Janta Party. He served as the Human Resource Development Minister in the Union Government of India starting from 31 May 2019. The name of his ministry was changed to Education Ministry in July 2020, following the ministry's name change, his title was changed to Minister of Education. [3]
He represented the Haridwar Parliamentary constituency of Uttarakhand in the 17th Lok Sabha. [4] BJP did not make him the candidate for 2024 General Elections.
He was the 5th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2009 to 2011, due to corruption allegations he was asked to resign from his post by the BJP Central Leadership. [5] [6]
Pokhriyal was born in Pinani village, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand to Paramanand Pokhriyal and Vishambhari Devi. He received an M.A. degree from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. [7] [8] [9]
Pokhriyal married Kusum Kanta Pokhriyal on 7 May 1985, with whom he has three daughters. [10] One of their daughters, Aarushi Nishank is a classical dancer, [11] [12] actress, producer and model. His wife died on 11 November 2012 in Dehradun at the age of 50. [13]
Pokhriyal started his career as a teacher in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated Saraswati Shishu Mandir. [14] He was first elected to public office in the erstwhile undivided Uttar Pradesh as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Karnaprayag constituency in 1991, defeating a five-time Congress MLA. [14] He was re-elected in 1993 and 1996 from the same constituency. In 1997 he was appointed to the position of Uttaranchal development minister. He was also Uttarakhand's chief minister (from 2009 to 2011) and served as a member of the Lok Sabha's 17th session and the chairman of the Assurance Committee. He is a representative of Haridwar constituency in the Lok Sabha. [10] He was the member of the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand for five consecutive terms from 1991 to 2012. He was first elected for the Karnaprayag ward in 1991 and served for three consecutive terms. In 2014, he resigned from the Doiwala, and was elected for Haridwar in the Lok Sabha. [15] On 30 May 2019, he was sworn in as Minister of Human Resource Development in the 2nd Modi Government. [16] [4] Following the ministry's name change to the Ministry of Education (India) in July 2020, he served under the title of Minister of Education. [3]
Pokhriyal has written novels, stories and poems. He has authored more than 100 books in Hindi, some of which have been translated to English as well as other Indian languages. Most of his books were published by two private publishers – Vani Prakashan and Diamond Books, and many were published between 2009 and 2011, when he was chief minister of Uttarakhand.
One of his works was adapted into the Garhwali film Major Nirala, which was produced by his daughter Aarushi Nishank and released in 2018. [17]
He is honoured by Hindi Writers Guild, Canada in 2021 and was conferred with the "Sahitya Gaurav Samman". [18]
Lt. Col. Maharaja Manabendra Shah was a member of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Tehri Garhwal constituency of Uttarakhand and was a member of the Indian National Congress before joining the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and later the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) political party. He became one of the BJP's longest-serving members. Shah was ambassador to Ireland from 1980 to 1983.

He stood for the 1996 Lok Sabha elections as BJP candidate and is Former Member of Parliament from Jalaun. He belong to the Koli community of Uttar Pradesh.
Jitin Prasada is an Indian politician from Uttar Pradesh. He was appointed Cabinet Minister by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on 26 September 2021. Earlier, he has been the former Minister of State for Human Resource Department, Government of India. He was representing Dhaurahra of district Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh in 15th Lok Sabha, where he won by 184,509 votes. On 9 June 2021 Jitin Prasad quit the Indian National Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of senior BJP leader Piyush Goyal.

He also served as Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in the Government of India from 2021 to 2024. An alumnus of Talcher Autonomous College and Utkal University, he has also been the Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Minister of Steel.
Bhagat Singh Koshyari is an Indian politician who served as the 22nd governor of Maharashtra from 2019 to 2023. An RSS veteran, Koshyari served as National Vice-President of BJP and party's 3rd State president for Uttarakhand. He also served as 2nd Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002 and thereafter, was the leader of the opposition in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2003. He also served as an MLC in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and MLA in Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. He later served as an MP in Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014 from Uttarakhand and then the MP in the 16th Lok Sabha from Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar constituency, earning him the distinction of being elected in both houses of State Legislature and both houses of National Parliament respectively.
Harish Singh Rawat is an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2014 to 2017. A five-time Member of Parliament, Rawat is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party. As a member of 15th Lok Sabha, Rawat served as Union Minister of Water Resources in the cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2012 to 2014. He also worked as Minister of State at the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (2011–2012) and Ministry of Labour and Employment (2009–2011).
Prakash Keshav Javadekar is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian. He served as the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change two times, from May 2014 to July 2016 and from May 2019 to July 2021.
Elections for the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in Uttarakhand state, India are conducted in accordance with the Constitution of India. The legislative assembly of Uttarakhand creates laws regarding the conduct of local body elections unilaterally while any changes by the state legislature to the conduct of state level elections need to be approved by the Parliament of India. In addition, the state legislature may be dismissed by the Parliament according to Article 356 of the Indian Constitution and President's rule may be imposed.

He has also served as Union Minister of State for Ministry of Human Resource Development between 2016 and 2017. He is a member of Modi's second ministry. The 2017 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election was the 4th Vidhan Sabha election of the state of Uttarakhand in India. Elections were held on 15 February 2017 in a single phase for the 69 seats of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. Voting in the Karnaprayag constituency was postponed until 9 March 2017 due to the death of BSP candidate Kuldeep Kanwasi in a road accident. In the previous election in 2012, none of the parties won a majority but the Indian National Congress formed the government with the help of PDF with the leadership of Vijay Bahuguna.

Tirath Singh Rawat is an Indian politician, a former Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from the Garhwal constituency in the 2019 Indian general election as member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was the party chief of Bharatiya Janata Party Uttarakhand from 9 February 2013 to 31 December 2015 and former member of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from Chaubattakhal constituency from 2012 to 2017. He was also the first Education Minister of Uttarakhand.
Madan Kaushik is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata Party. He was the immediate past BJP's state president in Uttarakhand and serving his fifth term as MLA from Haridwar constituency. He served as the cabinet minister from 2017 to 2021 and also, from 2007 to 2012 in Bhartiya Janta Party government under the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri and Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. He was first elected as a member of the Legislative assembly in the year 2002 and subsequently in the year 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022. In 2017, he won the elections with a margin of more than 37,000 votes, thereby getting the 68% of the total polled votes. He further won 2022 elections to serve his fifth term by winning with a margin of more than 15,000 votes.
