Members of the 16th Lok Sabha were elected during the 2014 Indian general election. The elections were conducted in 9 phases from 7 April 2014 to 12 May 2014 by the Election Commission of India. [1] The results of the election were declared on 16 May 2014.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (of the NDA) achieved an absolute majority with 282 seats out of 543, 166 seats more than in the previous 15th Lok Sabha. Its PM candidate Narendra Modi took office on 26 May 2014 as the 14th prime minister of India. The first session was convened from 4 to 11 June 2014. [2]
There was no leader of the opposition in the 16th Lok Sabha as the Indian Parliament rules state that a party in the Lok Sabha must have at least 10% (55) of the total seats (545) to be considered the opposition party. The Indian National Congress (of the UPA) could only manage 44 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party from Tamil Nadu came a close third with 37 seats. Mallikarjun Kharge was declared the leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha. [3]
Five sitting members from Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament, were elected to 16th Lok Sabha after the 2014 Indian general election. [4]
The pro-tem Speaker Kamal Nath was administered oath on 4 June 2014 [5] & presided over the election of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Sumitra Mahajan was elected as its Speaker on 6 June 2014 [6] and would remain in office until the day before the first sitting of the 17th Lok Sabha. [7] M Thambidurai was elected as Deputy Speaker on 13 August 2014. [8]

About one-third of all winners had at least one pending criminal case against them, with some having serious criminal cases. [20]

Compared to the 15th Lok Sabha, there was an increase of members with criminal cases. In 2009, 158 (30%) of the 521 members analysed had criminal cases, of which 77 (15%) had serious criminal cases. [19] [21]
As of May 2014, out of the 542 members analysed, 443 (82%) are having assets of ₹1 crore (US$130,000) or more. In the 15th Lok Sabha, out of 521 members analysed, 300 (58%) members had assets of ₹1 crore (US$130,000) or more. [19]
The average assets per member are ₹14.7 crore (US$1.8 million) (in 2009, this figure was ₹5.35 crore (US$670,000)).

Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda is an Indian politician who served as the 11th prime minister of India from 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997. He was previously the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. He presently is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka. He is the national president of the Janata Dal (Secular) party. Born in a farming family, he joined the Indian National Congress party in 1953, and remained a member until 1962. He was imprisoned during the Emergency. He became President of the state unit of Janata Dal in 1994, and was considered to be a driving force in the party's victory in Karnataka. He served as the 8th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. In the 1996 general elections, no party won enough seats to form a government. When the United Front, a coalition of regional parties, formed the central government with the support of the Congress, Deve Gowda was unexpectedly chosen to head the government and was elected Prime Minister. During his tenure as prime minister, he also served as Home Minister for some time. His prime ministerial tenure lasted for less than a year. After his prime ministerial tenure, he was elected to the 12th (1998), 14th (2004), 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha, as Member of Parliament for the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency. He lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019 from Tumkuru but has been elected to Rajya Sabha since.
Uma Bharti is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. She became involved with the Bharatiya Janata Party at a young age, unsuccessfully contesting her first parliamentary elections in 1984. In 1989, she successfully contested the Khajuraho seat, and retained it in elections conducted in 1991, 1996 and 1998. In 1999, she switched constituencies and won the Bhopal seat.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal is an Indian political party, based in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Kerala. The party was founded in 1997 by Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Kamal Nath is an Indian politician who served as the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for approximately 15 months and resigned after a political crisis. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from March 2020 to April 2022.
Sushma Swaraj was an Indian lawyer and politician, who served as the Minister of External Affairs of India in the first Narendra Modi government from 2014 to 2019. She was the second person to complete a 5-year term as the Minister of External Affairs, after Jawaharlal Nehru. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Swaraj was the second woman to hold the office of Minister of External Affairs, after Indira Gandhi. She was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. At the age of 25 in 1977, she became the youngest cabinet minister of the Indian state of Haryana. She also served as 5th Chief Minister of Delhi for a short duration in 1998 and became the first female Chief Minister of Delhi.
Captain Sachin Pilot is an Indian politician. Earlier he served as the MoS Corporate Affairs & MoS Communication & IT, Government of India, Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan and also President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. As Member of the Congress party, he has represented the Tonk assembly seat in Rajasthan since 2018. Pilot became the youngest citizen of India to become Member of Parliament, at the age of 26.

Mapanna Mallikarjun Kharge is an Indian lawyer and politician serving as the President of the Indian National Congress since 2022, and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha since 2021. He has been a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Karnataka since 2020.
Om Birla is an Indian politician, agriculturist, and social worker who is serving as the 17th and current Speaker of the Lok Sabha since 2019. He serves as a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Kota-Bundi constituency in Rajasthan since 2014. He was also a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly representing Kota South Assembly constituency from 2003 to 2014. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is a committee of selected members of parliament, constituted by the Parliament of India, for the purpose of auditing the revenue and the expenditure of the Government of India. They check that parliament exercises over the executive stems from the basic principle that parliament embodies the will of the people. This committee along with the Estimates committee (EC) and Committee on Public Undertakings (COPU) are the three financial standing committees of the Parliament of India.
Ajoy Kumar a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was served in the 15th Lok Sabha as an MP for Jamshedpur. He is the AICC In-charge of 3 states namely Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee and Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee. He is a member of the CWC. He is also the National Spokesperson of Indian National Congress. He was also the Former President of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee.
Chhedi Paswan is a former member of 16th Lok Sabha and a former member of Bihar Legislative Assembly. He represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2014. At various points, he has been with Janata Party, then its Charan Singh faction, then the reunited Janata Dal, Bahujan Samaj Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD and Nitish Kumar's JD(U).
Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma is an Indian politician and a Member of parliament (MP) from West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he is serving his second term as an MP for West Delhi. In 2014 he was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha, and re-elected in 2019 for the 17th Lok Sabha with the highest ever margin of victory in the history of Delhi, a margin of 578,486 votes.
Mahant Chandnath was an Indian politician and religious leader. He represented the Alwar Seat in the Parliament of India and was also the head of the Nath sect of Hinduism. He took ordination from Mahant Shreyonath in 1978.
Savitri Bai Phule is an Indian politician and president of the Kanshiram Bahujan Samaj Party (KBSP). She was elected to the state assembly in 2012 from Balha in Bahraich district as a candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party. She contested 2014 Lok Sabha election from Bahraich and became member of 16th Lok Sabha.
Nana Falgunrao Patole is an Indian politician who is the current President of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee from 5 February 2021. He was the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly before this appointment.
Heena Gavit is an Indian Bharatiya Janata Party politician from Maharashtra. She is a member of the 17th Lok Sabha from the Nandurbar constituency. She is a National Spokesperson of the BJP. Gavit is also a physician.
The 17th Lok Sabha was formed by the members elected in the 2019 Indian general election. Elections, all across India, were conducted in seven phases from 11 April 2019 to 19 May 2019 by the Election Commission of India. Counting started officially on the morning of 23 May 2019 and the results were declared on the same day.
Arjun Singh is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. He contested the 2019 Indian general election as a BJP candidate and won against TMC candidate Dinesh Trivedi.
