This is a list of currently serving ambassadors, high commissioners and permanent representatives of India. High commissioners lead India's diplomatic missions in member states of the Commonwealth of Nations and ambassadors lead diplomatic missions in other states. The head of a diplomatic mission to an international organization is called a permanent representative. All ambassadors, high commissioners and permanent representatives of India are appointed by the Ministry of External Affairs and are almost always career diplomats and members of the Indian Foreign Service.

The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is a diplomatic service and a central civil service of the Government of the Republic of India under the Ministry of External Affairs. The Foreign Secretary is the head of the service. Vikram Misri is the 35th and the current Foreign Secretary.
The Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India is tasked with formulating and implementing Indian foreign policy, in tandem with the repatriation of Indian citizens in danger abroad and the extradition of fugitives. The Ministry of External Affairs is steered by the Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India, a minister in the PM's Cabinet.
Shamma Jain is a senior Indian diplomat who served as the Indian Ambassador to Greece from June 2017 up to October 2019. She has also served as the Ambassador of India to Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea from 2008 to 2011. Aside from serving as an ambassador, Jain has held other high-level diplomatic roles, including as the Vice Ambassador of India to Italy and San Marino, Political Counsellor in the United States, and at the Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO in Paris.
Ruchira Kamboj is a retired Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1987 batch, who last served as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from August 2022 to May 2024 until her retirement. She has previously served as High Commissioner of India to South Africa, first female Indian Ambassador to Bhutan and Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO, Paris.
Rakesh Sood is a former Indian diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service cadre, columnist, and writer. He was appointed then Prime Minister's special envoy for disarmament and non-proliferation in September, 2013. He did his secondary schooling at Ramjas Higher Secondary School -5, New Delhi. He studied physics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and went on to join the Indian Foreign Service in July 1976.
Balkrishna Shetty is a retired Indian diplomat who served as India's Ambassador to Sweden, Latvia, Bahrain, Senegal and Mali
Dilip Sinha is an Indian diplomat and former public administrator. He served in the Indian Foreign Service from 1978 to 2014 and as chairman of the Manipur Public Service Commission, India, from 2015 to 2016. Ambassador Sinha is a public speaker on international security, Afghanistan-Pakistan-Iran and environmental diplomacy. He is the author of Legitimacy of Power: The Permanence of Five in the Security Council. The book traces the origins of international security cooperation and scrutinizes the moorings of the UN Security Council's powers in international law.
Ajai Malhotra is a former Indian career diplomat who served as Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation. He is the Chairperson of the Advisory Committee to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Geneva.
The permanent representative of India to the United Nations is India's foremost diplomatic representative to the United Nations. The permanent representative is the head of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York City.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, better known as S. Jaishankar, is an Indian diplomat, politician and author, who is serving as the 30th Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India since 31 May 2019. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has been a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha since 5 July 2019. He previously served as the Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018.
Saurabh Kumar is an Indian diplomat currently serving as Ambassador of India to European Union. He was previously the Indian Ambassador of India to Myanmar and to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Pooja Kapur is Additional Secretary and G20 Sous Sherpa in the Ministry of External Affairs of India. She was till recently the Indian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark and preceding that, the Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia.
Raveesh Kumar is an Indian diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service of 1995 batch. Currently, he is an Indian ambassador to the Czech Republic. Previously, he served as Indian ambassador to Finland also accredited to Estonia, residing in Helsinki. He was the former official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in the Government of India. He was the youngest ever official spokesperson. He was the Consul General of India in Frankfurt, Germany before being appointed as the spokesperson of the MEA.
Riva Ganguly Das is a retired Indian civil servant who belongs to the Indian Foreign Service cadre. She is the former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh and former Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, an autonomous organisation of the Government of India.
Yogesh Mohan Tiwari was an Indian diplomat. He was an officer of the Indian Foreign Service 1966 batch. He was a graduate of Government Science College, Jabalpur and St Stephen's College, Delhi. He served as India's ambassador to Singapore, Cyprus, Austria, Slovenia, Kenya and Eritrea. He also served as India's permanent representative to the IAEA and UNIDO in Vienna. His elder brother was Vishwa Mohan Tiwari, a retired air vice marshal, Indian Air Force. Ambassador Tiwari died in December 2019.
Anurag Srivastava is an Indian civil servant who belongs to the Indian Foreign Service cadre. He served as spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, India.
Kumar Tuhin is a career diplomat from the 1991 batch of the Indian Foreign Service. At present, he is the Ambassador of India to the Netherlands. Prior to this, he was the Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Before his tenure at ICCR, he was the Ambassador of India to Hungary. Earlier, he was India's High Commissioner to Namibia. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Tuhin worked for a few years in the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers.
Brian Clarence Hill was an Australian diplomat. He held senior diplomatic postings from the early 1950s through to the late 1970s, including as head of mission in Moscow (1953–1954), Ambassador to South Vietnam (1961–1964), Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva (1964–1969), Ambassador to Egypt (1969–1972), High Commissioner to New Zealand (1974–1977), Ambassador to Ireland (1977–1978), and Ambassador to Sweden (1978–1980).
Sunjay Sudhir is an Indian diplomat and current Indian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. He previously served as India's High Commissioner to Maldives from 2019 to 2021.
