The permanent representative of India to the United Nations is India's foremost diplomatic representative to the United Nations. The permanent representative (UN ambassador) [2] is the head of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York City.

He did his secondary schooling at Ramjas Higher Secondary School -5, New Delhi. He studied physics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and went on to join the Indian Foreign Service in July 1976.

He served as the Secretary to Government of India and later as Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York when India became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 8th time. He was also the President of the UN Security Council for August 2021.
