Muzaffar Hussain Baig is an Indian politician from Kashmir. He was the former Deputy Chief Minister of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. On Republic Day of 2020 he received India's third highest civilian honour Padma Bhushan. [1] [2]
Baig was the founding member of Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and was named as Patron of the party post-Mufti's death in 2016.

He was born in Wahidna,a small hilly village in Baramulla district of the Kashmir Valley. He received his master's degree from Harvard Law School.
He started his political career in 1996 with the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference where he held the position of Vice-Chairman. In 2002,he fought the Legislative Assembly election with the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party and won from Baramulla constituency. He was reelected in 2008.[ citation needed ] He held the position of Law Minister and Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the state cabinet for the period 2002–2006. Until 2006 he was Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. [4]
He served as Chief Spokesperson for the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party. He also worked in law firms in the United States and New Delhi in India. Baig served as Advocate General of the state of Jammu and Kashmir [5] from 1987 to 1989.
Baig was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from Baramulla.
In 2020,Baig was conferred the Padma Bhushan award,the third-highest civilian honor of India. [5]
Due to differences between him and Mehbooba Mufti,that grew after the abrogation of Article 370,It was being allegedly said that Baig joined Sajjad Lone's Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference, [6] [7] Peoples Conference disowns senior leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig. Party general secretary Imran Ansari said Baig never joined JKPC.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was an Indian politician who served twice as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,during November 2002–November 2005 and March 2015–January 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism in Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet and Home Minister of India in V. P. Singh's cabinet. He started in the wing of the National Conference led by G. M. Sadiq,which later merged into the Indian National Congress. He switched to Janata Dal in 1987,eventually founding his own regional party,People's Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP continues to be a political force in Jammu and Kashmir,currently led by his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.
Mehbooba Mufti is an Indian politician of the PDP,who served as the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first Female CM of J&K. After the revocation of the special status (autonomy) of the state in August 2019,Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was released only in October 2020,after the Supreme Court of India quizzed the government about the length of her detention.
Ghulam Nabi Azad is an Indian politician who served as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha between 2014 and 2021. He also served as the Chief Minister of erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008. On 26 September 2022,Azad announced his own political party as Democratic Progressive Azad Party. He is the chief patron cum founder of Democratic Progressive Azad Party.

Elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are conducted in accordance with the Constitution of India to elect the representatives of various bodies at national,state and district levels including the 114 seat unicameral Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Parliament of India. He is the son of former Home Minister of India and two time Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,Mufti Mohammad Sayeed,and brother of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,Mehbooba Mufti.
Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali is an Indian politician and former cabinet minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He is an Advocate by profession and was part of the 11th and 12th Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Darhal constituency. He is a second-generation politician whose father Chowdhary Mohmmad Hussain was a renowned politician in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Zulfkar has also served as Cabinet Minister under the Chief Ministership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti 2015 to 2018. He was associated with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and served as district chief of the party for district Rajouri 2003 to 2013. He resigned from the PDP and became one of the founding member of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Presently Vice President of the party. Ali has been Honoured with Best Legislature 2012. As a Cabinet Minister,Ali headed various portfolios. Zulfkar also implemented the national food security act (NFSA) in the state and launched a food for poor scheme (MMSFES).
The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is a political alliance between the several political parties in Jammu and Kashmir campaigning for autonomy for the region by restoring special status along with Article 35A of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah is the president of the alliance.
Legislative Assembly elections are speculated to be held in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir,India to elect 90 members of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in May 2024,along with the general elections. Legally,the election shall be held no later than 30 September 2024.
Peer Mohammed Hussain Soharvardi better known as Sher–e–Kuthar among his followers is a Kashmiri politician and former Minister of State in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
