Jagdish Sheth

Jagdish N. Sheth (born 1938) is the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing at the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. [1] He was a prominent member of the core team during the initial years of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, the first Indian Institute of Management. [2] Prof. Sheth was awarded by Padma Bhushan 2020 for his work in literature & education in United States. [3]

Early life

Sheth was born in Burma (now Myanmar) in a Jain family, where his father had migrated from Western India to set up a business as a rice merchant . In 1941, the family emigrated as a refugees in wake of Japanese invasion of Burma to India. He received most of his schooling in Madras (now Chennai). It was here that he met his future wife, Madhuri Shah, at a local literacy society for high school students that he had founded.[ citation needed ]

Academic career

Sheth came to the United States to further his academic career and received his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh in 1962. [4] He was fascinated by the psychological theories being advanced at that time and pursued a career in academia. During the mid-1960s he studied and researched at MIT, Columbia and the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his PhD in 1966 from its Katz Graduate School of Business. It was during this period that he started developing his "Theory of Buyer Behavior." A book that he co-authored with his mentor Professor John Howard provided the foundation for the future of research in the field of consumer psychology and marketing.

In 2017, he was named a fellow of the Association for Consumer Research. [5]

Writings and activities

Sheth has published more than 200 articles in journals and has written a number of books. His books include Tectonic Shift: The Geoeconomic Realignment of Globalizing Markets with Rajendra S. Sisodia, [6] The Rule of Three: Surviving and Thriving in Competitive Markets, Clients for Life: How Great Professionals Develop Breakthrough Relationships, and Handbook of Relationship Marketing. In 2007, he published The Self-Destructive Habits of Good Companies. In 2008, he published Chindia Rising. In 2014, he published The Accidental Scholar. [7]

The "Sheth Family Foundation" has established Sheth International Awards at the University of Pittsburgh's University Center for International Studies. [4]

In 2003, Sheth founded the "India, China & America Institute" (ICA Institute), a non-profit group that published newsletters and held seminars related to emerging markets, commercial growth, and alignment of policies between those three nations. [8]

He was also founding chairman of the Academic Council of the Mumbai Business School, a business school located in Mumbai, India, but which closed after attracting just 15 students. [9]

Delhi School of Economics (DSE), popularly referred to as "D School", is an institution of higher learning within the University of Delhi. The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business is the graduate business school of the University of Pittsburgh located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. V. 'Seenu' Srinivasan (1944) is an American scholar in the field of marketing science. He is the Adams Distinguished Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. Srinivasan is known for his research on market research and conjoint analysis. Srinivasan received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He worked for two years as a production-planning engineer at Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai prior to joining Carnegie-Mellon University where he received his MS and PhD in industrial administration.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jagdish Chandra Kapur</span> Social scientist

Jagdish Chandra Kapur (1920-2010) was an Indian social scientist, entrepreneur and the founder of Kapur Surya Foundation and Kapur Solar Farms. He was also the Editor of World Affairs Journal, a publication aiming at and providing a platform for better interaction between the developed and the developing nations. The Government of India honoured him in 2010, with the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of science and technology.

Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme is an Indian scientist, teacher, author and a former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of the Government of India, known for his expertise in heat transfer and energy technologies. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2001, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Chaitanyamoy Ganguly is an Indian nuclear scientist and a former head of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), credited with many innovations in the field of nuclear material science. He was honored by the government of India in 2002, with the fourth-highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Bishnupada Mukerjee or Bishnupada Mukhopadhyaya was an Indian pharmacologist and orthopedic surgeon, known for his contributions in the fields of pharmacological research and standardization of drugs in India. The Government of India honoured him in 1962, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his services to the nation.

Dr. V Kumar currently serves as the Salvatore Zizza Professor of Marketing, Tobin College of Business, St. John's University, NY, USA. Earlier he served as the Distinguished Term Professor and Senior Fellow at the Indian School of Business and prior to that he served as the faculty at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, where he held the Richard and Susan Lenny Distinguished Chair in Marketing.

Shantilal Chhaganlal Sheth (1912–1990) was an Indian pediatrician and the president of several medical institutions including the Medical Council of India, the apex body for matters related to medical administration and education in India. An honorary surgeon commander at the Indian Navy, he served as the honorary physician to the President of India. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine.

Srikant Datar is an Indian-American economist and the Dean of Harvard Business School. At Harvard, he concurrently serves as the Arthur Lowes Dickinson Professor of Business Administration.
