Advocate general (India)

In India, an advocate general is a legal advisor to a state government. [1] The post was created by the Constitution of India (vide Article 165) and corresponds to that of Attorney General for India at the union government level. The governor of each state shall appoint a person who is qualified to be appointed as judge of the High Court as the advocate general.

Ranjan Gogoi is an Indian former advocate and judge who served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from 2018 to 2019, having previously served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 2012 to 2018. He is currently a Member of the Rajya Sabha, having been nominated by President Ram Nath Kovind on 16 March 2020. Gogoi served as a judge in the Gauhati High Court from 2001 to 2010, and then was transferred as a judge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 2010 to 2011 where he later was the Chief Justice from 2011 to 2012. He is also a member of the Committee on External Affairs in the Rajya Sabha.

Kuttiyil Mathew Joseph is a former judge of Supreme Court of India; he retired on 16 June 2023. He is former chief justice of Uttarakhand High Court. Before his appointment as chief justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand on 31 July 2014, he had served as a judge of Kerala High Court for more than nine years.

Puspanathan Wilson is a Senior Advocate in India and has served as the Additional Solicitor General of India between August 2012 and May 2014, and the Additional Advocate General of the State of Tamil Nadu between August 2008 and May 2011.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sidharth Luthra</span> Senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India

Sidharth Luthra is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India. In July 2012, Sidharth Luthra was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India at the Supreme Court and represented the union and various state governments in matters relating to fundamental rights, electoral reforms, criminal law and policy issues. He resigned from this position in May 2014. He is the son of K.K. Luthra who was also a senior advocate and brother of senior advocate Geeta Luthra.

Justice Gita Mittal was an Indian judge, now retired. She is the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the first woman judge to serve in that capacity. She has also served as the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court while she was serving as a Judge of the Delhi High Court.

Deepak Gupta is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and former chief justice of the Tripura High Court and Chhattisgarh High Court. He has also served as a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, serving as the head of its green bench.

Rebecca Mammen John is a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, and works primarily in the field of criminal defence. She has represented parties in several widely reported cases, including the families of victims of the 1987 Hashimpura massacre, Indian stockbroker Harshad Mehta, and the accused in the Aarushi murder case. She has also been appointed as a Special Public Prosecutor on occasion by the High Court of Delhi, and frequently comments in leading newspapers and the media on issues of criminal justice reform in India.

Veena Birbal is a former judge of the Delhi High Court in India, and the former president of the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. She has adjudicated in a number of significant Indian cases concerning criminal offences and corruption, including the Scorpene deal scam, the 2G spectrum case, the Nitish Katara murder case, and the Uphaar Cinema Fire litigation.

Gujarat Lokayukta is the Parliamentary Ombudsman for the state of Gujarat (India). It is a high level statutory functionary, created to address grievances of the public against ministers, legislators, administration and public servants in issues related to misuse of power, mal-administration and corruption. It was first formed under the Gujarat Lokayukta and Upa-Lokayukta Act, and approved by the president of India on 1986. The passage of Lokpal and Lokayukta's Act,2013 in Parliament had become law from January 16, 2014 and requires each state to appoint its Lokayukta within a year. A bench of Lokayukta should consist of judicial and non-judicial members. An Upa-Lokayukta is a deputy to Lokayukta and assists him in his work and acts in-charge Lokayukta in case the position fells vacant before time.

It was constituted as per the mandatory requirement as per Advocates Act, 1961 and Bar Council of India. In March 1953, S. R.
