T. V. Somanathan (born 10 May 1965) is a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. [2] At present, he is serving as the Cabinet Secretary of India since 30 August 2024 . [3] Before this he served as the Finance Secretary of India (Department of Expenditure). [4] [5] [6] Prior to this appointment, he served as Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office. He also worked as Director at the World Bank Group, Washington D.C., where he initially joined under its Young Professionals Program. [2]

Education

Somanathan holds a Ph.D. in economics from Calcutta University, [2] [7] [8] an Executive Development Program diploma from Harvard Business School, [2] Master of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from Panjab University. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, London, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries, London, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, London, the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. [2] Somanathan has published numerous articles and papers on economics, finance, governance and public policy in academic journals and in the Hindu, Business Standard, Business Line, Indian Express, Fortune India, Yojana, Kurukshetra etc. [7] He also was a Young Professional for the World Bank Group (1996).

Career

Somanathan has served in various positions for both the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, [2] such as Secretary to Chief Minister, Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, Principal Secretary in Special Initiatives department and Planning & Development department, Joint Secretary in Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Additional Secretary in PMO, [9] Commissioner for Commercial Taxes, Tamil Nadu and served as Finance Secretary of India. T.V Somanathan took charge as Cabinet Secretary from Rajiv Gauba on 30 August 2024 after serving as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat. [3]

Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan was an Indian civil servant, bureaucrat who served with the Indian Administrative Service and as a politician. After serving in various positions in Madras and in various ministries of the Central Government, he served as the 18th Cabinet Secretary of India in 1989. He was appointed the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India (1990–96) and became known for his electoral reforms. He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service in 1996. After retirement as the CEC, he contested the 1997 Indian presidential election and lost to K.R. Narayanan after which he unsuccessfully contested 1999 Gujarat assembly election from Gandhinagar constituency under Indian National Congress.

The Finance Secretary is the administrative head of the Ministry of Finance. This post is held by senior IAS officer of the rank of Secretary to Government of India. Tuhin Kanta Pandey is the incumbent Finance Secretary.

S. Machendranathan IAS, who hails from Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu. After completing MBA from Cochin University he joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1977 and thereafter the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1979.

The Tamil Nadu Council of Ministers is the executive wing of the Government of Tamil Nadu and is headed by the State's Chief Minister M. K. Thereafter, he was appointed as a member of Sixteenth Finance Commission on 1 January 2024.

Kandathil Mathew Abraham is an Indian bureaucrat and retired IAS officer, who is currently serving as Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Kerala. He also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and Executive Vice Chairperson of Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council. Atanu Chakraborty the chairperson of HDFC Bank. He was appointed by the Reserve Bank of India in April 2021. He is a retired 1985 batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service and Gujarat cadre, and served as Economic Affairs Secretary of India until his retirement in April 2020.

Venkatramanan Anantha Nageswaran is an Indian economist and the 18th Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India. He served as the global chief investment officer at Bank Julius Baer in Switzerland after serving as its Head of Research for Asia. Prior to this, he worked for Credit Suisse in Switzerland and Singapore, and for the Union Bank of Switzerland. He has served as the Dean of IFMR Graduate School of Business, as a professor for graduate students at the Singapore Management University, and at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore & Indian Institute of Management Indore.

Gagandeep Singh Bedi is an Indian civil servant, currently serving as the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu in India. He is known for his crisis management and relief work at Cuddalore during the Tsunami in December 2004, floods in 2015 and the restoration of peace in the aftermath of Thoothukudi violence in May 2018.
