Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi [2] (born 27 November 1962) is an Indian politician who is the Minister of Consumer Affairs,Food and Public Distribution and the Minister of New and Renewable Energy since 2024. [3] He was also the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs,the Minister of Coal and the Minister of Mines from 2019 to 2024. Joshi has also been a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha since 2004,representing the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency. He was also the State President of Bharatiya Janata Party,Karnataka (BJP) from 2014 to 2016. He served in the panel of chairpersons of the Lok Sabha (2014–2018).
Joshi first came to public notice with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) when they organised a movement to hoist the Flag of India at the Idagah Maidan Hubli Karnataka during 1992–1994. Recently the Supreme Court of India has upheld the Karnataka High Court order restoring the ownership of the said maidan to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal corporation. He has been elected to Lok Sabha in the general elections of 2004,2009,2014,and 2019.
Pralhad Joshi was born on 27 November 1962 in Bijapur,Mysore State,India,to father,Venkatesh Joshi,and mother,Malatibai Joshi. [4] [5] His father was an Indian Railways employee and Joshi is the third of his parents. [5] Joshi's primary education was in the Railway School,his secondary education in New English School in Hubballi , and for his higher education,Joshi graduated from Shri Kadasiddeshwar Arts College in Hubballi. [5]
Joshi has been member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from a young age and he attended the RSS' training camps. [5]
An industrialist by vocation in his early days,Pralhad Joshi ingratiated himself into the political fray by organising a movement to hoist the Tri-colour flag at Idagah Maidan (also known as Kittur Rani chennamma Maidan) Hubli Karnataka from 1992 to 1994. He also led the "Save Kashmir Movement" during those years,which established him as a known figure in those regions of the state. [6] He was then elected the president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Dharwad district. He first contested in the 14th Lok Sabha elections in 2004,where he won from the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency by defeating INC's B.S Patil.
He's won three consecutive elections from that constituency and is the incumbent MP of Dharwad. In the 2009 General elections,he won by second highest margin amidst 28 constituencies in Karnataka,while most of the ministers and Members of Parliament secured a loss in the same year. In 2019,he retained the Dharwad seat for a second term by a margin of over one lakh votes. [7]
Joshi took oath as a Cabinet minister on 30 May 2019,and he was appointed the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs,the Minister of Coal and the Minister of Mines. [8] His tenure in these ministerial posts lasted till June 2024,and after the 2024 Indian general election,Joshi was appointed the Minister of Consumer Affairs,Food and Public Distribution and the Minister of New and Renewable Energy in June 2024. [9] Joshi's win,for the fifth time in a row,from the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency was a record of consecutive wins by any candidate in the constituency;however Joshi stated that he was unhappy due to winning with a reduced vote margin. Joshi is married to Jyoti Joshi and they have three daughters. [5] Joshi has been reported to be a reader and has interests in Indian classical music and cricket. [11]
Hubli is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. The twin cities Hubli–Dharwad form the second largest city in the state by area and population and the largest city in North Karnataka. Hubli is in Dharwad district of Karnataka and is the taluk headquarters of Hubli City and Hubli Rural. Although it hosts the HDMC office,the district headquarters is in Dharwad.
Uma Bharti is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Murli Manohar Joshi is an Indian politician. He is one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of which he was the President between 1991 and 1993. Joshi is the former Member of Parliament from Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency. He is a former professor of physics in University of Allahabad. He is one of the senior most leaders of the BJP and one of the founding members. Joshi later became the Union Human Resources &Development Minister in the National Democratic Alliance government. Joshi was awarded Padma Vibhushan,the second-highest civilian award,in 2017 by the Government of India. Joshi has been a member of RSS since his college days.
Dharwad,also known as Dharwar,is a city located in the northwestern part of the Indian state of Karnataka. Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician,who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress,where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat,which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. In March 2024,he was announced as the BJP candidate from the Belgaum Constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
Dharwad or Dharawada is an administrative district of the state of Karnataka in southern India. The administrative headquarters of the district is the city of Dharwad,also known as Dharwar. Chandrakant Bellad is the former member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly and an Indian Politician. He first contested 1983 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections as a Janata Party candidate from Dharwad Assembly constituency and lost by a wafer thin margin of 132 votes against S. R. Morey of Indian National Congress. Later he defeated the same candidate and emerged victorious in 1985 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections. He unsuccessfully contested against then 3-time Indian National Congress MP D. K. Naikar from Dharwad North Lok Sabha constituency during 1991 Indian general elections. Despite not having any BJP MLA from then Dharwad district,Chandrakant Bellad gave a close fight by getting 29% votes which was just 22,209 less than D. K. Naikar. He was elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994 and 1999. He also represented Hubli-Dharwad West from 2008 to 2013. He was the President of Border Area Development Authority from 2008 to 2013. He announced retirement from active politics before 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections.

He won the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly Election defeating former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar,who quit BJP after he was denied a ticket.
