Udupi district is an administrative subdivision in the Karnataka state of India,with the district headquarters in the city of Udupi. It is situated in the Canara old north Malabar coastal region. There are seven taluks,233 villages and 21 towns in Udupi district. The three northern tehsils of Udupi,Kundapur and Karkala,were partitioned from Dakshina Kannada district to form Udupi district on 25 August 1997. Moodabidri was officially declared as new tehsil (taluk) in 2018.

Devaragunda Venkappa Sadananda Gowda is an Indian politician who served as the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers of India in the Second Modi ministry from 14 November 2018 to 7 July 2021. He also served as the Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation of India from 5 July 2016 to 24 May 2019 in the First Modi ministry. He is represented the Bangalore North constituency in the parliament from 2014 to 2024. He also held Ministry of Railways and other cabinet positions in the First Modi ministry. He also served as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka.

B. Janardhana Poojary is a senior politician from Indian National Congress party. He was a former Union Minister and Karnataka's Congress President. During the Prime Ministership of Smt. Indira Gandhi he had been appointed Union Minister of State for Finance in 1982 and he continued to be Union Minister of State for Finance during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi until 1987. Later Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as Union Minister of State for Rural Development from 1987 to 1989. Shree Rajiv Gandhi also appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee in 1990 as well as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 1990. He continued to be General Secretary of All India Congress Committee during the tenure of Prime Minister Shree P. V. Narasimha Rao up to 1996. After Shree Rajiv Gandhi his wife All India Congress Committee President &United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi also appointed Shree B. Janardhana Poojary as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 2003 for the second time. He continued as President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee up to 2005.
Venur Dhananjay Kumar Alva was a former Union and Cabinet minister of India and a former Member of Parliament from Mangalore. He was cabinet minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism in 1996,Union Minister of State for Finance from 1999 to 2000 and Union Minister of State for Textiles from 2000 to 2003. Shobha Karandlaje is an Indian politician from Karnataka who is currently the Minister of State for Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises in the Third Modi Ministry. She was also Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister of State for Food Processing Industries in the Second Modi ministry. She is also the Vice President of Bharatiya Janata Party,Karnataka and Member of Parliament representing Bangalore North since 2024,and represented Udupi Chikmagalur Lok Sabha Constituency from 2014 to 2024. She was a cabinet minister in the Government of Karnataka. She is a close confidant to former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
Udupi Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka a state in southern India. This constituency was created as part of the implementation of the delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies in 2008,based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India constituted in 2002. It first held elections in 2009 and its first member of parliament was D. V. Sadananda Gowda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gowda was selected on 4 August 2011 to become Chief Minister (CM) of Karnataka after the previous CM B. S. Yeddyurappa resigned. He therefore had to resign as MP for this seat which forced a by-election in 2012. This by-election was won by K. Jayaprakash Hegde of the Indian National Congress (INC). As of the latest elections in 2019,Shobha Karandlaje of the BJP represents this constituency.
