Vijay Sankeshwar is an Indian businessman from Dharwad, Karnataka. [4] He along with Anand Sankeshwar (managing director) is the chairman of India's largest logistics firm VRL Group. He is also known for being the owner of the largest fleet of commercial vehicles in India. [5]

He left BJP and founded the Kannada Nadu Party. Later he joined the Karnataka Janata Paksha of BJP outcast Yeddyurappa; the party eventually merged back with BJP. Sankeshwar was also a former Member of Parliament from North Dharwad constituency as a BJP member.

Sankeshwar previously owned Karnataka's largest circulating newspaper, Vijaya Karnataka , until it was sold to Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd. (The Times Group) for an undisclosed sum in 2007. After the expiry of a five-year non-compete clause he launched Vijaya Vani in 2012. Vijaya Vani is now the #1 Kannada daily newspaper, with 8 lakh+ sold copies every day.[ citation needed ]

Sankeshwar launched a new Kannada channel, Digvijay 24X7, on April 4, 2017. [6]

In 2020, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India.

Personal life

Vijay Sankeshwar was born on 2 August 1950 in Betageri, Gadag Mysore State (now Karnataka) to Basavanneppa Sankeshwar and Chandrawwa. [1] His father, was a businessman who established the printing press B G Sankeshwar and Co. (now Sankeshwar Printer Private Limited) in Gadag.

Sankeshwar married the Lalitha Sankeshwar on 14 December 1972. [1] Couple had three daughters and a son, Anand Sankeshwar, is the managing director of VRL Logistics Limited.

Education

Sankeshwar obtained a commerce at Adarsh Shikshan Samiti, College of Commerce, Gadag, Karnataka University, Dharwad, Karnataka.[ citation needed ]

Business career

Vijay got interest in transport business and in 1976 started the cargo business with one truck that he had bought by taking a loan of Rs 2 lakhs. Initially he suffered severe losses due to accidents, no communication, and competition.[ citation needed ]

In 1978, Vijay Sankeshwar and his family shifted to Hubballi to expand their transport business and brought three more trucks for business. In 1983, started a transport company Vijayanand Roadlines Limited. In beginning of 1990 VRL had 117 commercial vehicles and had turnover more than ₹4 crores. In 1993, starts the courier delivery across the Karnataka. Sankeshwar purchase 4 Passenger Buses in 1996, which carry passengers Bangalore to Hubballi.[ citation needed ]

In 2022, Anand Sankeshwar produced the biopic of Vijay Sankeshwar as Vijayanand released on 9 December 2022 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam. [7] The biopic will focus on Sankeshwar’s journey from owning a single truck to making it India’s largest logistics fleet. [8] [9]

Municipal Corporation of the City of Hubballi-Dharward or Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is the Municipal Corporation responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad, located in North Western part of Karnataka state in India. The organization is known, in short, as HDMC. This civic administrative body administers an area of 213 km2. HDMC consists of 82 elected members from four Vidhan Sabha constituencies of Hubballi-Dharwad. Presently the Council is under suspended animation pending election of new members. Chandrakant Bellad is the former member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly and an Indian Politician. He first contested 1983 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections as a Janata Party candidate from Dharwad Assembly constituency and lost by a wafer thin margin of 132 votes against S. R. Morey of Indian National Congress. Later he defeated the same candidate and emerged victorious in 1985 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections. He unsuccessfully contested against then 3-time Indian National Congress MP D. K. Naikar from Dharwad North Lok Sabha constituency during 1991 Indian general elections. Despite not having any BJP MLA from then Dharwad district, Chandrakant Bellad gave a close fight by getting 29% votes which was just 22,209 less than D. K. Naikar. He was elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994 and 1999. He also represented Hubli-Dharwad West from 2008 to 2013. He was the President of Border Area Development Authority from 2008 to 2013. He announced retirement from active politics before 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections.

Vijayanand is a 2022 Indian Kannada-language biographical film directed by Rishika Sharma, produced by Dr. Anand Sankeshwar under the banner of VRL Film productions a unit of VRL Media Pvt Ltd. The film is based on the life of Indian businessman, Vijay Sankeshwar. The film stars Nihal, Bharat Bopanna, Anant Nag, Ravichandran, Prakash Belawadi, Anish Kuruvilla, Vinaya Prasad and Siri Prahlad. The music is composed by Gopi Sundar.

Republic Kannada is a free-to-air Indian Kannada-language news channel, launched on 22 September 2023, by Republic Media Network, co-founded by Arnab Goswami and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Chandrashekhar funded the channel through his company Jupiter Capital Private Limited. Republic Kannada was previously named Dighvijaya News and was owned by Vijay Sankeshwar's VRL Media. Republic TV officially bought the channel and rebranded to Republic Kannada.
