Irshad Mirza (died 4 December 2022) was an Indian industrialist and the executive chairman of Mirza International group of companies. [1] He was awarded the fourth-highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2010, for his outstanding contribution in the field of trade and industry. [2] [3]

Biography

In 1979, Mirza founded 'Mirza Tanners Private Limited' for manufacturing finished leather at Magarwara near Kanpur. He was a former chairman of the Uttar Pradesh State Minority Commission. [1] [4] He was an alumnus of the Aligarh Muslim University and a former member of the University Court.

Death

Mirza died from an illness at the age of 95 on 4 December 2022 at a Regency Hospital, Kanpur. [5] [4] [6]

Awards and recognition

In year 2010, government of India awarded Mirza the Padma Shri award for his work in the field of Trade and Industry. [2] [7] His name has also appeared in Forbes magazine’s list of influential industrialists. [4] [8]

Komal Kothari (1929-2004) was an Indian folklorist and ethnomusicologist. Komal Kothari had devoted his life to investigation and documentation of folk traditions of western Rajasthan. Kothari received the honour of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. Komal Kothari painstakingly worked to preserve the cultural memory and made numerous recordings of folk music. He studied Langa and Manganiyar communities of folk musicians of Thar desert. Komal Kothari was not only a scholar but also a man of action. He co-founded Rupayan Sansthan - Rajasthan Institute of Folklore, in 1960 in the village of Borunda. The institution houses a repository of recordings by Kothari and works to collect, preserve, and disseminate the oral traditions of Rajasthan. Kothari was co-editor of the journal Lok Sanskriti, a journal based on the theme of folk culture. Besides, Kothari arranged international performances of folk artists from Rajasthan in several counries. His monograph on Langas, a folk-musician caste in Rajasthan, was enlivened by an accompanying album of recordings of twelve folk songs sung by Langa artistes. His understanding of desert culture and its connections with ecology endeared him to the environmentalists. He planned a museum based on the ecology of the broom’, to show the technical use of specific types of desert grass for specific purposes. His vision was actualised in the form of Arna Jharna - The Thar Desert Museum of Rajasthan in Borunda, near Jodhpur. Kothari was a scholar of patterns of culture and his expertise enriched both folklore studies and history.

Agra Metro is an under-construction rapid transit network in Agra, the fourth largest city in the Indian state of the Uttar Pradesh. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted in 2014 and cleared by the Uttar Pradesh cabinet in 2015. However, due to the formation of a new government and a new Metro Rail Policy, a revised feasibility report was created with the government finally approving the project in early 2019. The Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway or National Expressway 6 (NE-6), is an under construction 62 km long, 6-lane wide(expandable to 8) access controlled expressway in India's Uttar Pradesh. The expressway will connect Lucknow and Kanpur and will run parallel to NH-27 which connects Kanpur and Lucknow with a distance of about 85 km (53 mi) between existing and proposed parallel roads. The expressway will start from its junction with NH-27 near Shaheed Path in South Lucknow connecting Bani, Kantha, Amarsas and terminating at its junction with NH No. 27 near Kanpur.

Shyamlal Chaturvedi was a journalist and poet from the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. He was conferred the Padma Shri civilian honour in the field of literature and education, in the year 2018.

On June 3, hundreds of Muslims demonstrated after Friday prayers in Kanpur against the remarks on Muhammad made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Violence broke out after some Muslim demonstrators threw stones at police.
