Khalsa College is a historic educational institution in the northern Indian city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab, India. Founded in 1892, the sprawling 300-acre (1.2 km2) campus is located about eight kilometers from the city-center on the Amritsar-Lahore highway, adjoining Guru Nanak Dev University campus, to which Khalsa College is academically affiliated.
Surinder Kaur was an Indian singer and songwriter. While she mainly sang Punjabi folk songs, where she is credited for pioneering and popularising the genre, Kaur also recorded songs as a playback singer for Hindi films between 1948 and 1952. For her contributions to Punjabi music, she earned the sobriquet Nightingale of Punjab, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1984, and the Padma Shri in 2006.
The Chief Khalsa Diwan or Chief Khalsa Diwan Charitable Society is a Sikh organisation that is the central organization of various Singh Sabhas spread across Punjab, India. Unlike the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, the C.K.D. is an apolitical body and only concerns itself with religious, educational and cultural issues. The organization originally controlled Sikh religious and educational concerns and was an advocate of Sikh political rights, though it presently is mostly limited to educational spheres. It was the main council of Sikhs until the birth of more radical organizations, such as the Central Sikh League, the S.G.P.C., and the Akali Dal.
Giani Gurdit Singh was born in Mithewal village in the state of Punjab, India. He was considered one of the greatest contemporary writers in Punjabi, and his book Mera Pind is regarded as a classic. It is now in its 14th edition and has been in print continuously since 1961. He was also a pioneering journalist, the Owner-Editor of Parkash from 1947–1978. He was also the editor of Singh Sabha Patrika, a monthly magazine of Sikh history and divinity. Giani Gurdit Singh graduated as "Giani" from Punjab University, Lahore in 1945, and he specialised in literature, divinity, history and folklore. He was a member of the Punjab Legislative Council from 1956 to 1962. He contributed to the debates at that time and in the creation of Punjabi University, Patiala and the recognition of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, as the 5th Takht of the Sikhs. He was General Secretary of the Singh Sabha Shatabadi Committee, Amritsar, renamed Kendriya Sri Guru Singh Sabha. As the editor of the magazine Singh Sabha Patrika, he focused on issues of importance to the Sikhs. He also established two Guru Granth Vidya Kendras, one in Chandigarh and another in Mehrauli, Delhi.
S. Tarlochan Singh is an Indian politician. He is a Member of the Parliament of India, representing Haryana. He served as Chairman National Commission for Minorities from 2003 to 2006, was member, National Human Rights Commission of India, Govt. of India, 2003 to 2006. He served as Vice Chairman, National Commission for Minorities from 2000 to 2003.
The Punjab Ratan Award, is a type of award given by the Government of Punjab for exceptional excellence and achievement in the service of Punjab or at an international level. The award is given to deserving awardees in the field of art, literature, culture, science, technology, and politics. The award consists of the Punjab Rattan Award itself, Punjabi silver plaque and a Punjab Rattan Award citation. In Punjab, the prestigious award is considered to be as prized and valued as the much sought-after Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award.
Surjit Patar was an Indian Punjabi language writer and poet from Punjab. His poems enjoy immense popularity with the general public and have won high acclaim from critics.
Dalip Kaur Tiwana was one of the foremost novelists and short-story writers of contemporary Punjabi literature. She won awards, both regional and national, and was a widely translated author. She retired as Professor of Punjabi, and Dean, from Punjabi University, Patiala. She is widely credited as a tour-de-force in the creation of the contemporary literature in the Punjabi language.
Sadhu Singh Hamdard (1918–1984) was an Indian freedom fighter and journalist, excelling in both Urdu and Punjabi and an innovative poet, who carried in his name the pseudonym 'Hamdard', "sharing with all the pangs of their hearts," "friendly towards all."
Vijay Kumar Chopra is the chief executive officer and editor in chief of the Punjab Kesari print news organisation. He is involved in social welfare work and has received a Padma Shri award. In August 2009, he was elected by the Chairman of the Press Trust of India.
Paramjit Kaur Landran is a lawyer, member of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee for Mohali constituency representing the Shiromani Akali Dal. She was elected to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee House in the elections held on 18 September 2011. She is Former Chairperson of Punjab State Women Commission, Chairperson of Panchayat Mahila Shakti Association, Punjab, A scheme sponsored by Govt. of India, Press and Office Secretary of Shiromani Akali Dal. She served as Vice Chairperson of Panchayat Samiti, Kharar from 2008 to 2013.
Ganda Singh was an Indian Punjabi and Sikh historian and Padma Bhushan awardee. In addition to scores of research papers, booklets and pamphlets, he published over two dozen full-length volumes of historical value.
Harkishan Singh was Professor Emeritus at the Panjab University. He was a well recognized pharmaceutical academic, medicinal chemistry researcher and science historian. He had more than half a century experience in his respective fields to his credit. He worked at the Banaras Hindu University, University of Saugar, and the Panjab University in India, and abroad at the University of Maryland, University of Mississippi and the University of London.
Abhay Chhajlani was an Indian journalist and the chief editor of the Indore-based daily, Nai Dunia. He was the president of the Indian Newspaper Society, a post to which he was elected in 2002. He also served the society as a member of its executive committee. He was associated with Blood Donation 365 Days, an initiative promoting blood donation. He was the chairman of Abhay Prashal, a social facility in Indore and participated in several social forums. The government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to journalism.
Kunwar Singh Negi was an Indian braille editor and social worker. He has transliterated 300 books into braille. His major works include Bhagwan Buddha Ka Updesh and Hazrat Muhammad Ki Vani, both being about teachings of Gautam Buddha and Muhammad. He was presented with Indian civilian awards Padma Shri in 1981 and later with Padma Bhushan in 1990.
Trilok Singh Chitarkar (1914-1990) was a versatile Indian painter. He has unique style of presenting himself through variety of themes - Sikh religion, history, culture, folk lore, love legends, portraits, social evils, nature, illustration of Gurbani, Shabads, visuals in Punjabi Encyclopedia and books. He was well versed with deep knowledge of Gurbani, history and religion. He knew many languages i.e. Gurmukhi, Punjabi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Persian, Assamese and Bengali. He translated articles from Bengali to Punjabi and published these in the book titled Bangla De Daab in 1974. The Artist was honoured in 1973 by the Chief Minister, Punjab,India Giani Zail Singh at a state level function organised at his residence, Chitralok, Patiala. Language department, Punjab published a book in Punjabi-Chitralok's Contribution to Art and released on the 70th birthday of the artist, 10 December 1984 at a special function organised in Central Library at Patiala for his contribution to Art.
Harmohinder Singh Bedi is an Indian academician, academic administrator and author. Since 4 July 2018, he has been serving as the Chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh.
Avadh Kishore Jadia is a poet and author in the Bundeli language and the Braj language from the Chhatarpur district in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. He was also an Ayurveda medical practitioner in the Madhya Pradesh Govt Service. In the year 2022, Govt of India honored him by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions as an author in the Bundeli and Braj languages.
Jaibhagwan Goyal also known as Prof. J. B. Goyal is an Indian littérateur, academic, professor who is credited for discovering 17th to 19th century Hindi literary works in Gurumukhi manuscripts. He is notable for his contribution to Sikh literature He was former Professor in the Hindi Department and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Languages, Kurukshetra University in Haryana.
