Gegong Apang (born 10 January 1947) is an Indian politician from Arunachal Pradesh. He served as the 3rd Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh from 18 January 1980 to 19 January 1999 and again from August 2003 to April 2007. He is a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) and was a member of the Indian National Congress before 2016. Apang is the Arunachal Pradesh's longest serving Chief Minister and also the fourth longest serving Chief Minister of an Indian state after Pawan Kumar Chamling of Sikkim, [1] [2] Jyoti Basu of West Bengal and Naveen Patnaik of Odisha.
Gegong Apang started his political career as a member of the Congress Pradesh Council between 1972 and 1975 after passing out from JN College,Pasighat. [3] He became the member of the first provisional Assembly between 1975 and 1978 and served as its agriculture minister in 1977. [3] He was also elected to the first Legislative Assembly of the state in the year 1978 and was appointed its PWD and agriculture minister. [3] Apang won the 1978,1980 and 1984 assembly elections from Yingkiong-Pangin Assembly Constituency. [4] Later he won the 1990,1995,2000 and 2004 assembly elections from Upper Siang district's Tuting-Yingkiong Assembly Constituency of Arunachal Pradesh. [5]
Apang was chosen as Chief Minister for first time on 18 January 1980,after getting elected to the assembly for second time. [6] He held the office until 1999,when he resigned,triggered by a no-confidence motion by a split in the Congress Party. [7]
He was elected leader of the newly formed United Democratic Front,a coalition of his own political party,the Arunachal Congress and several others,in 2003. Only a few months later,Apang and his supporting MLAs merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party, [8] the first time the BJP had ever ruled a state in north-eastern India. [9] A few months after the BJP led National Democratic Alliance lost the 2004 general election,Apang returned to the Indian National Congress. [10] In October 2004,Congress won the majority in state assembly election,making Apang return as the Chief Minister. [11] He was in office as Chief Minister till 9 April 2007,when Congress MLAs revolted against his leadership under Dorjee Khandu,who succeeded him as chief minister and Congress Legislature Party leader. [12] Mr.Apang,out of four terms as Chief Minister,headed Congress Government for three terms and one term from Arunachal Congress,regional party floated by him in 1996,after differences with the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao over his demand for deportation of the Chakma-Hajong tribals from the tribal state. Apang resigned from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress on 17 February 2014 (party sources said) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 20 February 2014 prior to Indian general election and Arunachal Pradesh legislative assembly election. On 15 January 2019 he resigned from primary membership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by saying that "BJP now platform to seek power." . [13] He joined Janata dal (Secular). [14]
Apang was arrested on 24 August 2010 for alleged involvement in 1000 crore Public Distribution System scam. [15] Apang denied the charges and claimed they are politically motivated,though the government under Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu maintained that the investigation was conducted independently without political interference. [16] The scam allegedly involves fraudulent hill transport subsidy bills that were paid without the required financial oversight while he was the chief minister. [16]
Apang was born on January 10,1947,at Karko village in Upper Siang district. [3] Apang is from Yingkiong,the headquarters of Upper Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh. He has three wives. One of Apang's sons was kidnapped at gun point in June 2008. [17] Later that month he returned home safely,an unknown person to the Apang family who claimed to be of the same clan of Yadap Apang (Apang's wife) kidnapped him. [18]

Currently,Kamen Ringu is the chairman of the party. They were in power in Arunachal until all of their MLAs defected back to Indian National Congress.
Pawan Kumar Chamling is an Indian politician and writer who served as the 5th Chief Minister of Sikkim from 1994 to 2019. He is the longest serving Chief Minister of Sikkim and India,surpassing Jyoti Basu. Chamling is the Founding President of the Sikkim Democratic Front. He also served as the Leader of the opposition,Sikkim Legislative Assembly in the year of 2019. He represents the Namchi-Singhithang constituency in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly since 2019 till 2024 and the Damthang constituency from 1985 to 1994. Prior to establishing the Sikkim Democratic Front,Chamling served as Minister for Industries,Information and Public Relations from 1989 to 1992 in Nar Bahadur Bhandari's cabinet.
Dorjee Khandu was an Indian politician who served as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh from 2007 until his death in a helicopter crash in April 2011.
The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election of 2009 took place in October 2009,concurrently with the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana. The elections were held in the state for all 60 Assembly seats on 2009-10-13. The results were declared on 2009-10-22. Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu's Indian National Congress party came back to power in the state with an increased majority,winning 42 seats in the 60 seat Assembly.

Omak Apang is an Indian politician from Arunachal Pradesh. He was born to parents of Adi descent. He is the son of politician Gegong Apang,who served as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh between 1980 and 1999 and again between 2003 and 2007. He served as the minister of state for tourism in Second Vajpayee ministry as its youngest minister in 1998–99. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party,Arunachal Congress as well as the Indian National Congress and currently,a member of Bharatiya Janata Party after resigning from the primary and active membership of the Indian National Congress in February 2014 and joining the BJP on 20 February 2014.

Starting April 2015,the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh underwent a political crisis. The Indian National Congress party in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly was divided between supporters of the serving Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and supporters of Kalikho Pul. In 2016,the President's rule was imposed ending Tuki's tenure as the chief minister. In February 2016,Kalikho Pul became the Chief Minister when 14 disqualified MLAs were reinstated by the Supreme Court. On 13 July 2016,the Supreme Court quashed the Arunachal Pradesh Governor J.P. Rajkhowa’s order to advance the Assembly session from 14 January 2016 to 16 December 2015,which resulted in President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh. As a result,Tuki was restored as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on 13 July 2016. But hours before proving majority,he resigned as the Chief Minister on 16 July 2016. He was succeeded by Pema Khandu,who in September 2016 left the INC and joined People's Party of Arunachal along with majority MLAs. He further joined BJP in December 2016 along with majority MLAs.
Legislative Assembly elections were held in Arunachal Pradesh on April 11 to elect the 60 members of Legislative Assembly. The term of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly ends on June 1,2019. This resulted in a landslide victory for Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. Pema Khandu took oath as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister on 29 May 2019.
The third Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election was held in 1984. Indian National Congress (INC) won 21 seats out of 30 seats,while the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) won four seats and independent candidates won four seats. Gegong Apang was sworn in as Chief Minister.
