Prem Khandu Thungon (born 5 June 1946) [1] is an Indian politician from Arunachal Pradesh. He was the first chief minister subsequent to the erstwhile North-East Frontier Agency becoming a union territory in 1972,and the first assembly elections held in 1978. As of 2023,he remains the youngest chief minister of the state. He also served as Deputy Minister for Supply and Rehabilitation (1980-1982) and Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Education,Culture and Social Welfare(1982-1984) in Third Indira Gandhi ministry.Then he served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry(1991-1992),Ministry of Industry- Department of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises(1992-1993),Ministry of Urban Affairs and Employment in(1993-1995) in P. V. Narasimha Rao ministry.
North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) conducted its first elections for the state legislature in 1977. [2] Thungon became the youngest chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh at the age of 29. [3]
In the first parliamentary election in the state,the 1977 Indian general election,Thungon was elected uncontested from the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency on an Indian National Congress party ticket. In the 1980 Indian general election,Thungon won the seat amongst four other candidates with 41,736 votes of the total 98,260 valid votes cast. [2]
In 1998,the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case followed by chargesheeting ten people 5 years later. This included Thungon,who was then a Minister of State in the Ministry of Urban Affairs and Employment in the P. V. Narsimha Rao ministry,and Maheshwari who opened a bank account in the name of a non-existent person to divert money. [4] In July 2015,special CBI judge Ajay Kumar Jain found Thungon and three others guilty of criminal conspiracy,cheating,and forgery under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act. [4] Subsequently,the court sentenced Thungon to 4.5 years in jail and a fine of INR 10,000. The court observed that all financial records in the case were fudged but nobody complained. The judgement further added,"The saddest part is that its knowledge was apparent both at the Centre and the state level,but no action was taken... On the other hand,the entire government machinery worked to shield the offences committed but he minister and bureaucrats. Fortunately,the offences surfaced during investigation in some other case." Thungon was 68 years old at the time of conviction. [5]
CBI registered another graft case in 1996 against Thungon,Sheila Kaul,the then Urban Affairs and Employment Minister,Tulsi Balodi,Lakhpa Tsering,and Krishna. It concerned allotment of government shops and stalls between September 1993 and June 1994. The five accused were charged with dishonesty and fraud in the allotment in contravention of rules. Proceedings against Kaul and Balodi were abated as they died during the trial. In March 2016,Thungon was sentenced three and half years. In addition,special CBI judge Sanjeev Aggarwal imposed a fine of INR 100,000 on Thungon. [6]
CBI lodged another case in 1996 against 18 people including Thungon in regard to alleged irregularities in allotment of government quarters. The chargesheet in the case was filed only in 2003 with offences for forgery,criminal conspiracy and corruption framed in 2009. In 2017,special CBI judge Kamini Lau acquitted 15 people,including Thungon on the grounds of insufficient evidence almost 21 years later. The other three died during the course of the trial. [7]
Peoples Party of Arunachal,a regional political party in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It was founded in September 1977 by Bakin Pertin,Oken Lego and L. Wanglat as president,Vice President and General Secretary of the party. Tomo Riba resigned from PK Thungon government Congress Party and joined PPA as Vice President of the Party. Currently,Kamen Ringu is the Chairman of the party. They were in power in Arunachal until all of their MLAs defected back to Indian National Congress.
Gegong Apang is an Indian politician from Arunachal Pradesh. He served as the 3rd Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh from 18 January 1980 to 19 January 1999 and again from August 2003 to April 2007. He is a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) and was a member of the Indian National Congress before 2016. Apang is the Arunachal Pradesh's longest serving Chief Minister and also the fourth longest serving Chief Minister of an Indian state after Pawan Kumar Chamling of Sikkim,Jyoti Basu of West Bengal and Naveen Patnaik of Odisha.
Virbhadra Singh ( ) was an Indian politician who served 6 terms and 21 years as the 4th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. A leader of the Indian National Congress party,he was elected 9 times as a Member of Legislative Assembly to the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha and 5 times as Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha. Virbhadra Singh was popularly known by the honorific Raja Sahib. Singh holds the distinction of being the longest serving Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh,holding the office from 1983 to 1990,from 1993 to 1998,from 2003 to 2007 and finally from 2012 to 2017,when he was succeeded by the BJP's Jai Ram Thakur. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962,1967,1971,1980 and 2009. Singh served as a Union Minister in the governments of Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. At the time of his demise,he was serving as an MLA from Arki constituency.
Sheila Kaul was a social democratic leader of the Indian National Congress,a politician,cabinet minister and governor,and the oldest living former member of parliament in India at the time of her death. She was also an educator,social worker,and social reformer in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh,and an independence activist in British India. She was Jawaharlal Nehru's sister-in-law and Indira Gandhi's maternal aunt.
Dorjee Khandu was an Indian politician who served as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He was reelected in 2009 Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections.

The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election of 2009 took place in October 2009,concurrently with the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana. The elections were held in the state for all 60 Assembly seats on 2009-10-13. The results were declared on 2009-10-22. Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu's Indian National Congress party came back to power in the state with an increased majority,winning 42 seats in the 60 seat Assembly.
The 2G spectrum case was a political controversy in which politicians and private officials of the United Progressive Alliance coalition government India were allegedly involved in selling or allotting 122 2G spectrum licenses on conditions that provided an advantage to specific telecom operators. A. Raja,then Telecom Minister,was accused of selling 2G spectrum licenses at a very low cost which resulted in the loss of ₹1,760 billion in government revenue. Raja was also accused of not following rules and regulations as well as not recognizing any advice from the Ministries of Finance and Law and Justice of India while allotting 2G spectrum licenses to telecom operators. Series of allegations were made on allotting 2G spectrum licenses including allegations from Central Bureau of Investigation after investigating the case alleging Raja for intentionally advancing the cut-off date to favour some specific firms,which were allegedly ineligible for applying for telecom licenses,in return for bribes.
Pema Khandu is an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He is son of former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Dorjee Khandu. Since assuming office of chief minister in July 2016,he and his government have twice changed their party affiliation;in September from the Indian National Congress to the Peoples Party of Arunachal,and then in December 2016 to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Previously he had served as Minister of Tourism,Urban Development and Water Resources in Nabam Tuki's government.

His first term spanned between November 2011 and January 2016,while the second term merely lasted for 3 days in the month of July 2016. He belongs to the Indian National Congress. Tuki represents Sagalee Assembly constituency in Papumpare district.

The motive of the new political front was to protect the interest of the people of the region as well as uniting non-Congress parties in Northeast India. Himanta Biswa Sarma was appointed as the convenor of the front.
The Uttar Pradesh illegal sand mining scam is a political scandal relating to events that occurred in 2012–2017 during the Samajwadi Party (SP) rule. It is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the 2016 orders of Allahabad High Court for allowing illegal mining in 7 districts of Uttar Pradesh –Shamli,Hamirpur,Fatehpur,Siddharthnagar,Deoria,Kaushambi and Saharanpur –in violation of rules and ban by the National Green Tribunal. On 5 January 2019,the CBI raided 14 suspects in 14 locations in 7 cities across Uttar Pradesh and Delhi pertaining to this scam,and incriminating evidence was seized.
Legislative Assembly elections were held in Arunachal Pradesh on April 11 to elect the 60 members of Legislative Assembly. The term of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly ends on June 1,2019. This results in a landslide victory for Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. Pema Khandu took oath as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister on 29 May 2019.
The next Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election is scheduled to be held in or before April 2024 along with next Indian general election.
The Tenth Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh was constituted after the 2019 Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections,which were concluded on 11 April 2019,and the previous assembly term ending on 1 June 2019.
