Amy Elizabeth Herr is an American professor. She is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where she is attached to the Department of Bioengineering. At Berkeley she was also the founding executive director of the Bakar Bioenginuity Hub. Herr is a Chan Zuckerberg BioHub Investigator and the Chief Technology Officer of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network, a fellow of both the National Academy of Inventors and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, as well as a co-founder of Zephyrus Biosciences, a biotechnology company that was acquired by Bio-Techne.
Amy Herr was born in Ohio, and grew up in Florida. [1] In high school, a research project took her to the International Science and Engineering Fair, where she received an American Meteorological Society (AMS) Honorable Mention for her project focused on the performance of iced airfoils. [2]
She earned her B.S. in Engineering & Applied Science at Caltech, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University where she studied under Tom Kenny and Juan Santiago as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Her thesis is titled "Isoelectric Focusing for Multi-Dimensional Separations in Microfluidic Devices."[ citation needed ]
After completing her PhD, Herr became a staff member in the Biosystems Research Group at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California from 2002 to 2007, [3] where she worked on protein analysis in complex biological media such as saliva and serum. She joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 2007. Her laboratory focuses on developing the tools required for complex biological analysis, including identification of proteins from a single cell, in the pursuit of quantitative medicine. [4] [5] This proteomic information provides additional insights beyond genomic analysis. One application is analysis of proteins from circulating tumor cells, which could allow a doctor to understand how a cancer patient is responding to treatment with only a blood draw. [6] The lab is also affiliated with University of California, San Francisco, QB3: The California Institute of Quantitative Biosciences, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She describes her research interests in this way:
"Difficult measurement challenges exist at the interface of biology and quantitative science. Advanced measurement tools are already adding to our knowledge and capabilities in the areas of genomics and transcriptomics. As we push forward the frontier of quantitative, precise, and dynamic measurements, we’ll see even more knowledge unlocked from nature and translated into improving the human condition. Dynamic protein measurements are a lynchpin to realizing these knowledge leaps." [7]
She held a five-year appointment as the Lester John and Lynne Dewar Lloyd Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering from 2015 to 2020. [1] She is also on the advisory board for the Bakar Fellows program at UC Berkeley and previously served as its faculty director. [8] [9] She serves on the NIH National Advisory Council of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and she is a board member of the Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society. [3]
Herr is also an entrepreneur, co-founding Zephyrus Biosciences in 2013 (acquired by Bio-Techne, Inc. in 2016). [10] Zephyrus Biosciences enabled protein analysis at the single cell level for thousands of cells in parallel. [11] For this and her other efforts in commercializing academic research, she received the Berkeley Visionary Award from the City of Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, 2017. [12] Speaking about the UC Berkeley campus entrepreneurial spirit, she said "When I came here, I never saw myself as an entrepreneur, but we have people here who can demystify the process. And if a student thinks, 'I can do this,' then it's going to spread to a lot of our students." [13] The co-founders of Eko Devices, who developed a digital stethoscope and other cardiovascular health tools, credit their time in Herr's Capstone Design class with inspiring the initial idea for their company. She also has a record of mentorship since her early career, including receiving an Outstanding Mentor Award in 2007 at Sandia Laboratories, [3] the 2012 Ellen Weaver Award for mentoring from the Association of Women in Science (Northern California), [15] and an Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Mentoring from the Visiting Scientist & Postdoc. In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, she joined N95DECON, a scientific consortium researching methods to effectively decontaminate N95 masks. [16] [17]
Joseph Lyman DeRisi is an American biochemist, specializing in molecular biology, parasitology, genomics, virology, and computational biology.
Carolyn Ruth Bertozzi is an American chemist and Nobel laureate, known for her wide-ranging work spanning both chemistry and biology. She coined the term "bioorthogonal chemistry" for chemical reactions compatible with living systems. Her recent efforts include synthesis of chemical tools to study cell surface sugars called glycans and how they affect diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and viral infections like COVID-19. At Stanford University, she holds the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professorship in the School of Humanities and Sciences. Bertozzi is also an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and is the former director of the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience research center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3) is a nonprofit research and technology commercialization institute affiliated with three University of California campuses in the San Francisco Bay Area: Berkeley, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz. QB3's domain is the quantitative biosciences: areas of biology in which advances are chiefly made by scientists applying techniques from physics, chemistry, engineering, and computer science.
Peter S. Kim is an American scientist. He was president of Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) 2003–2013 and is currently Virginia & D.K. Shana O. Kelley is a scientist and Neena B. Schwartz Professor of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. She is affiliated with Northwestern's International Institute for Nanotechnology and was previously part of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine. Kelley's research includes the development of new technologies for clinical diagnostics and drug delivery. In 2023, she was chosen as president of Chicago's new Chan Zuckerberg Biohub.

Jennifer Anne Doudna is an American biochemist who has pioneered work in CRISPR gene editing, and made other fundamental contributions in biochemistry and genetics. She received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with Emmanuelle Charpentier, "for the development of a method for genome editing." She is the Li Ka Shing Chancellor's Chair Professor in the department of chemistry and the department of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley. She has been an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1997.
Lucy Shapiro is an American developmental biologist. She is a professor of Developmental Biology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Professor of Cancer Research and the director of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine.

Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, or simply Biohub, is a nonprofit research organization. In addition to supporting and conducting original research, CZ Biohub acts as a hub and fosters science collaboration between UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco (UCSF) and Stanford. The Biohub is funded by a $600 million contribution from Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. It was co-led by Stephen Quake and Joseph DeRisi from its inception in 2016 until 2022, when Quake left to become president of the Biohub Network. Sandra Schmid joined as Chief Scientific Officer in 2020.
Rebecca Abergel is a professor of nuclear engineering and of chemistry at University of California, Berkeley. Abergel is also a senior faculty scientist in the chemical sciences division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she directs the Glenn T. Laura Ann Waller is a computer scientist and Ted Van Duzer Endowed Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. She was awarded a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Fellowship to develop microscopes to image deep structures within the brain in 2017 and won the 2018 SPIE Early Career Award.
Tanja Kortemme is a bioengineering professor at University of California, San Francisco. She has been recognized for outstanding contributions in computational protein design, including energy functions, sampling algorithms, and molecules to rewire cellular control circuits. She was an inaugural Chan Zuckerberg Biohub investigator and was inducted into American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows.
Lisa Gunaydin is an American neuroscientist and assistant professor at the Weill Institute for Neurosciences at the University of California San Francisco. Gunaydin helped discover optogenetics in the lab of Karl Deisseroth and now uses this technique in combination with neural and behavioral recordings to probe the neural circuits underlying emotional behaviors.
Roya Maboudian is distinguished professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-director of the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center. She also holds The John F. Heil, Jr. Chancellor's Chair in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, and is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Affairs in the College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley. Katherine Snowden Pollard is the Director of the Gladstone Institute of Data Science and Biotechnology and a professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator. She was awarded Fellowship of the International Society for Computational Biology in 2020 and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2021 for outstanding contributions to computational biology and bioinformatics.
Markita del Carpio Landry is a Bolivian-American chemist who is an associate professor in the department of chemical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research considers nanomaterials for brain imaging and the development of sustainable crops. She was a recipient of the 2022 Vilcek prize for creative promise. del Carpio Landry's work has been featured on NPR, popular mechanics, the San Francisco Chronicle, and C&E News.
Jennifer Ahern is an American epidemiologist. She currently holds the King Sweesy and Robert Womack Endowed Chair and is Associate Dean for Research at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. Her research focuses on the effects of the social and physical environment, and programs and policies that alter the social and physical environment, on many aspects of health including violence, substance abuse, mental health, and perinatal health.
Aaron Michael Streets is an African American bioengineer and associate professor in the Department of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California. He is the principal investigator at the Streets Lab, where he and his team use tools from mathematics, physics, and engineering to study biology. Streets is currently developing microfluidic technology for single-cell measurements due to its high-resolution imaging.
