Amy Ippoliti (born December 6, 1969) is an American Yoga teacher, author, and earth conservationist. She is the co-founder of 90 Monkeys, an online school for advanced yoga education. [1] Amy has studied yoga for over 30 years and has been teaching since 1997.

Early life and education

Ippoliti was born in New York, New York. Ippoliti began practicing yoga at the age of 16 in the Sivananda tradition of yoga. After graduating from Oberlin College with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, Ippoliti returned to New York where she taught self-defense and fitness classes while continuing to practice yoga.

Ippoliti completed her first yoga teacher training with Cyndi Lee in 1997. In 1998, Ippoliti met John Friend and became a certified Anusara Yoga teacher in 2000. In 1999, she met Douglas Brooks, a professor of religion at University of Rochester and scholar of Shri Vidya Tantra, Sanskrit, and Tamil. Ippoliti continues to study with Brooks. [2]

Professional life

Ippoliti began teaching yoga in 1997. In addition to teaching for fitness companies such as Equinox Fitness and Crunch Fitness, she was also a teacher for a number of successful start-up yoga centers in New York, including OM Yoga, Laughing Lotus, and VIRAYOGA. Ippoliti also maintained a clientele of private students, including executives at Atlantic Records, Pfizer, and Bear Stearns, as well as authors, prominent CEOs, and Hollywood celebrities. [3]

Ippoliti designed the 100-hour Anusara Yoga Immersion in 2002 and served on the Anusara Yoga Curriculum Committee. [4] In January 2012, Ippoliti renounced her certification from Anusara Yoga. [5]

Ippoliti has led national and international yoga teacher trainings, workshops, and retreats since 1999. She has also presented at yoga conferences and festivals such as Yoga Journal Live, Wanderlust, Hanuman Festival, and Omega Institute for Holistic Studies.

In 2012, Ippoliti co-founded [6] 90 Monkeys, an online and in-person school for advanced yoga education.

Ippoliti has contributed to a number of print and online publications, including Yoga Journal, Yoga Digest, Yoga International, Origin Magazine, Mantra Magazine, Elephant Journal, prAna Stories, and more. She has also been featured in Yoga Journal, Newsweek, New York Magazine, Allure Korea, Origin Magazine, and more. Ippoliti is the co-author of a new book titled, The Art and Business of Teaching Yoga: The Yoga Professional’s Guide to a Fulfilling Career , published by New World Library. [7]

Personal life

Ippoliti currently lives in Boulder, Colorado. Ippoliti is an advocate for earth and marine conservation. Ippoliti has partnered with Shawn Heinrichs and Taro Smith for a number of underwater photography projects aimed at raising awareness on overfishing and the extinction of marine species. [8]

Anusara School of Hatha Yoga School of modern yoga

Anusara School of Hatha Yoga, also known as Anusara Yoga is the successor of a modern school of hatha yoga founded by American-born yoga teacher John Friend in 1997. Friend derived his style from the Iyengar style of yoga and reintroduced elements of Hindu spirituality into a more health-oriented Western approach to Yoga.

Vishnudevananda Saraswati Founder of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and Ashrams

Vishnudevananda Saraswati was a disciple of Sivananda Saraswati, and founder of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and Ashrams. He established the Sivananda Yoga Teachers' Training Course, one of the first yoga teacher training programs in the West. His books The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga (1960) and Meditation and Mantras (1978) established him as an authority on Hatha and Raja yoga. Vishnudevananda was a peace activist who rode in several "peace flights" over places of conflict, including the Berlin Wall prior to German reunification.

Sivananda yoga School of hatha yoga

Sivananda Yoga is a spiritual yoga system founded by Vishnudevananda; it includes the use of asanas but is not limited to them as in systems of yoga as exercise. He named this system, as well as the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres organization responsible for propagating its teachings, after his guru, Sivananda with the mission 'to spread the teachings of yoga and the message of world peace' which has since been refined to 'practice and teach the ancient yogic knowledge for health, peace, unity in diversity and self-realization.'

<i>ascent</i> (magazine)

ascent was an independent, not-for-profit magazine published quarterly that explores the intersection of spiritual values with social and political issues, art, culture and contemporary thought. ascent also published a website, a blog, books, and held an annual retreat at Yasodhara Ashram. The tag line for the magazine was "Yoga for an inspired life". Its offices were based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Yin Yoga A slow-paced school of modern yoga as exercise

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga as exercise, incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles. For beginners, asanas may be held from 45 seconds to two minutes; more advanced practitioners may stay in one asana for five minutes or more. The sequences of postures are meant to stimulate the channels of the subtle body known as meridians in Chinese medicine and as nadis in Hatha yoga.

Sharon Gannon

Sharon Gannon is a yoga teacher, animal rights advocate, musician, author, dancer and choreographer. Along with David Life, she is the co-founder of the Jivamukti Yoga method.

Forrest Yoga is a style of yoga as exercise. It was created by and named for Ana T. Forrest in 1982. It is known for "its long holding of positions, emphasis on abdominal core work, and standing series that can go on for 20 poses on each side". Reputed for its intensity, the style emphasizes connecting to one's feelings in order to work through physical and emotional trauma.

Sivananda Radha Saraswati

Sivananda Radha Saraswati, born Sylvia Demitz, was a German yogini who emigrated to Canada and founded Yasodhara Ashram in British Columbia. She established a Western-based lineage in the Sivananda tradition and published books on several branches of Yoga, including Kundalini Yoga for the West and Mantras; Words of Power. She was a member of the California Institute of Transpersonal Psychology and developed transpersonal psychology workshops to help students prepare for intense spiritual practice. Teachers trained at Yasodhara Ashram can now be found across North America and in Europe, the Caribbean, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Kino MacGregor is an American Ashtanga Yoga teacher, author, entrepreneur, influencer, inspirational speaker, and video producer. At 29 years old, she became one of the youngest people to receive the certification to teach Ashtanga Yoga by its founder K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India.

Modern yoga consists of a range of techniques including asanas (postures) and meditation derived from some of the philosophies, teachings and practices of the Yoga school, which is one of the six schools of traditional Hindu philosophies, and organised into a wide variety of schools and denominations. It has been described by Elizabeth de Michelis as having four types, namely: Modern Psychosomatic Yoga, as in The Yoga Institute; Modern Denominational Yoga, as in Brahma Kumaris; Modern Postural Yoga, as in Iyengar Yoga; and Modern Meditational Yoga, as in early Transcendental Meditation. The yoga scholar Mark Singleton however does not subscribe to De Michelis's framework, considering the categories to "subsume detail, variation, and exception". In the 21st-century, modern yoga has become the subject of academic study. It has adopted innovations from Western gymnastics and other practices.

Srivatsa Ramaswami is a teacher of Vinyasa Krama yoga. He studied for 33 years under the "grandfather of modern yoga", Krishnamacharya. In India he teaches at Kalakshetra. He has run workshops in America at the Esalen Institute, the Himalayan Institute and many other centres. He is the author of four books on yoga.

Paul Grilley is an American teacher of modern yoga known for helping, along with Sarah Powers, to develop the slow-paced style, Yin Yoga. He and his wife Suzee Grilley train teachers in Yin Yoga.

Janice Gates is a teacher of yoga as exercise, known for her emphasis on the power of yoginis, women in yoga and her work in yoga therapy.

Frank Jude Boccio is a teacher and one of the originators of mindful yoga. He is known both for his teaching in centres across America, and for his 2004 book Mindfulness Yoga: The Awakened Union of Breath, Body and Mind, which describes a practice that combines yoga as exercise and Buddhist meditational practice.

Yoga in Sweden

Yoga in Sweden is the practice of yoga, whether for exercise or other reasons, in Sweden. The form of yoga practised in the Western world was influenced by Pehr Henrik Ling's system of gymnastics. Sweden is home, too, to Europe's first yoga school, the Goswami Yoga Institute in Stockholm.

Cyndi Lee is a teacher of mindful yoga, a combination of Tibetan Buddhist practice and yoga as exercise. She has an international reputation and is the author of several books on her approach.
