The University of the Republic is a public research university in Montevideo, Uruguay. It is the oldest and largest university in the country, as well as the second largest public university in South America and the world's 57th largest by enrollment, with a student body of 137,757 undergraduate students in 2018 and 6,351 postgraduate students in 2012. It was founded on 18 July 1849 in Montevideo, where most of its buildings and facilities are still located. Its current rector is Rodrigo Arim.

Ana Carolina Cosse Garrido is a Uruguayan engineer and politician who has been Intendant of Montevideo since 27 November 2020. A member of the Broad Front, she served as Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining from 2015 to 2019 during the second administration of President Tabaré Vázquez. In the 2019 Uruguayan general election, she was elected to the Senate of Uruguay, taking her seat on 15 February 2020. On 27 September 2020, she was elected Intendant of Montevideo, the capital of the country. She is a candidate in the 2024 Broad Front presidential primaries for president of Uruguay in the 2024 general election.

Andrea Gamarnik is an Argentinian molecular virologist noted for her work on Dengue fever. She received a 2016 L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science fellowship for work on mosquito-borne viruses include Dengue fever. She also was granted the Konex Award Merit Diploma in 2013 and the Platinum Konex Award in 2023 for her work in those last decades. She studied at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of California, San Francisco. She has done work for the Leloir Institute. She is the first female Argentinian to become a member of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Beatriz Álvarez Sanna is a Uruguayan chemist and biochemistry professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of the Republic. She researches in the areas of redox biochemistry and enzymology. In 2013 she was the winner of the L'Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science.
Erna Martha Frins Pereira is a Uruguayan physicist. She works as a professor and researcher at the University of the Republic. She was president of the Uruguayan Physics Society from 2007 to 2011. In 2012 she won the National L'Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science for her research in environmental physics.

Mariana Meerhoff is a Uruguayan researcher and Full Professor at the University Center of the Eastern Region of the University of the Republic (UdelaR). She is also honorary associate researcher at Aarhus University and a member of the Advisory Board of the South American Institute for Research and Education in the Sustainability and Resilience Sciences (SARAS). Likewise, she works as a Level 5 Full Professor of the Basic Sciences Development Program (PEDECIBA), and is a Level 3 Researcher of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores of the National Research and Innovation Agency of Uruguay. She currently has more than 90 publications of scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. In 2011 she was recognized with the L'Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science for the project "Ecosystem functioning in water bodies: effects of the degree of impact and the opening of the ecosystem". In 2015 she received the International Recognition of Professional Excellence in Limnology (IRPE) and the national Roberto Caldeyro Barcia-PEDECIBA Award.
Amy Theresa Austin is an Argentine ecologist. She is a principal research scientist at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council in Argentina and a professor at the Faculty of Agronomy, University of Buenos Aires.
Karen Astrid Hallberg is an Argentine scientist and professor of physics at the Balseiro Institute. and at the Bariloche Atomic Centre. Se was awarded the 2019 L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science Laureate.
Madeleine Renom Molina is a Uruguayan teacher, researcher and meteorologist. She was the first Graduate in Meteorological Sciences from the University of the Republic. Renom specialized in the University of Buenos Aires obtaining her doctorate in Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences. Renom is a professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of the Physics Institute of the Faculty of Sciences, and a researcher at the PEDECIBA-Geosciences and level I researcher of the National System of Researchers of the ANII. She was the Director of the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (INUMET) up until July 15, 2020.
Adriana Cristina Serquis is an Argentine physicist, the president of the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), and principal researcher of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET). In 2014, she received the L'Oréal-UNESCO National Award For Women in Science for her contribution to the rational use of electrical energy.

She completed the Doctorate in Sciences at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro since 1991, obtaining the title in 1995. She later began working as a teacher at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of the Republic, where she became professor.
