Shantanny Anasha Campbell Lewis (born 1984) is a Nicaraguan politician who is co-director of the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism and Minister of Tourism of Nicaragua. She is the first person of African descent to hold that ministerial role.
Born in Bluefields,Nicaragua,in 1984,Campbell has creole heritage. [1] She studied at the Moravian College there and completed higher education in Managua. She holds a degree in International Relations and a PhD in Social Sciences,the latter from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. [1] She is member of the Nicaraguan Campbell dynasty,which has been accused of nepotism and corruption. [2] [3]
In 2004 she was chosen Miss Bluefields and participated in the national Miss Nicaragua pageant,where she was first runner-up. [4] By 2010 she was working for CARICOM (the Caribbean Community Organisation) as a policy advisor. [1] In 2013,she was appointed by the Central American Tourism Council as Secretary of Central American Tourism Integration,a position she held for four years. [5] In 2015,she was appointed co-director of the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute. [6] In 2020,on behalf of the Nicaraguan government,she assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Central American Tourism Council and Board of Directors of the Central American Tourism Promotion Agency for a period of six months. Tourism in Costa Rica has been one of the fastest growing economic sectors of the country and by 1995 became the largest foreign exchange earner. Since 1999,tourism has earned more foreign exchange than bananas,pineapples and coffee exports combined. The tourism boom began in 1987,with the number of visitors up from 329,000 in 1988,through 1.03 million in 1999,over 2 million in 2008,to a historical record of 2.66 million foreign visitors in 2015. In 2012,tourism contributed with 12.5% of the country's GDP and it was responsible for 11.7% of direct and indirect employment. Porta Caribe is a tourism region in southern Puerto Rico. It was established in 2003 by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company,an agency of the Government of Puerto Rico. When created in 2003 it consisted of 14 municipalities in the south central zone. With the creation of the neighboring Porta Cordillera zone in July 2012,the municipalities of Adjuntas and Jayuya were transferred to the newly created Porta Cordillera zone and Porta Caribe became a 12-municipality tourism region. The name Porta Caribe translates to "Doorway to the Caribbean." Its executive director is Maritza W. Ruiz Cabán.
