Valeriy Vasylyovich Pidluzhnyy is a retired long jumper who represented the Soviet Union. Born in Donetsk, Ukrainian SSR, he trained at the city's Trudovye Rezervy. A three-time Olympian, he won two silver medals at the European Athletics Indoor Championships as well as a gold medal at the 1974 European Athletics Championships and a bronze medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics. His personal best was 8.18 m, set in the 1980 Olympic final in Moscow.

He won the gold medal at the 1987 European Athletics Junior Championships with a championship record mark of 8.17 m – a record which still stands as of 2018. The following year he ranked second in the global indoor season with a best of 8.32 m, behind American Larry Myricks. He set a lifetime best of 8.34 m outdoors that year, ranking eighth on the global lists.
The AAA Indoor Championships was an annual indoor track and field competition organised by the Amateur Athletic Association of England. It was the foremost indoor domestic athletics event during its lifetime.
