Andrea Marie Breiling is an American contemporary painter known for large-scale abstract works. [1]

Early life and education

Breiling was born in Phoenix, Arizona. She holds a BFA in Studio Art and Gender Studies from University of California, Irvine (2008). She also holds an MFA in Studio Art from Claremont Graduate University (2014). [2]

Career

Breiling started her arts career painting with brushes in a bold colourful abstract style. [3] She transitioned to using spray paint on canvas. [4]

Breiling presented her first ever solo show with Broadway Gallery in 2021. [4] The same year, she staged her first solo exhibition with Almine Rech in Brussels, Belgium. [5] She also presented another exhibition in London within the same 2021. [6] In 2022, she staged a solo show presented by Night Gallery at Villa Paula in Miami. [7] This was featured by Cultured Magazine as one of the 9 Miami Art Week Openings You Shouldn’t Miss. [7] In 2023, she did another solo exhibition with Almine Rech in New York City. [8] She has also staged other solo shows with notable galleries across the United States. [9]

Breiling and her work have been featured multiple times on Artsy’s 10 In-demand works on Artsy This Week. [10] She has also been featured in other notable media. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

Breiling's art belongs to the public collections of Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL, [16] Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ, and other museums and institutions. [17] She is represented by Night Gallery (Los Angeles) [18] and Almine Rech Gallery. [19] [20]

Publication

A hardcover book of Breiling's work, titled Spray Paint Paintings was published by Almine Rech Editions in collaboration with Night Gallery in 2023. [21]

The New York Times' critic Michael Brenson wrote of her 1984 exhibition, Portraits of Women: "The works are dense, brooding and yet elated. The turbulence of the paint not only looks but also feels like freedom." Cohen interviewed many other artists also associated with continuing the tradition of American Abstraction for Bomb Magazine including; Ralph Humphrey, Dona Nelson, Craig Fisher, Carl Ostendarp, and Joan Mitchell. Her work has also been identified with traditions of European abstraction, and specifically German abstraction, including the work of Wols, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter. She began exhibiting in Germany in the early nineties and continued to show at some of its most prestigious institutions.

Bisa Butler is an American fiber artist who has created a new genre of quilting that has transformed the medium. Although quilting has long been considered a craft, her interdisciplinary methods—which create quilts that look like paintings—have catapulted quilting into the field of fine art. She is known for her vibrant, quilted portraits celebrating Black life, portraying both everyday people and notable historical figures. Her works now count among the permanent collections at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Art Institute of Chicago, Pérez Art Museum Miami and about a dozen other art museums nationwide. She has also exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Epcot Center, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and many other venues. In 2020, she was commissioned to quilt cover images for Time magazine, including the "Person of the Year" issue and its "100 Women of the Year" issue. With a multi-year wait list for private commissions, one of Butler's quilts sold at auction in 2021 for $75,000 USD.

Almine Rech Ruiz-Picasso is a French art dealer and owner of the eponymous contemporary art gallery. The gallery has exhibition spaces in Paris, Brussels, London, New York and Shanghai. The gallery opened in 1997 in Paris.
